Buffalo Head Coach and Student-Athletes Quotes
UB Coach Jim Hofher:
“Our guys fought hard – they fought at the beginning, they fought at the middle and they fought at the end. One good thing is how our guys fight.”
(on the defense) “Those three big plays are yards that add up fast – and we need to eliminate those. On one of the plays, we would have to say it was a poor defensive call and that one was on the coaches. On the other two, we just didn’t execute. On the long pass, our guy, Gemara Williams was in pretty good position to make the play, but their guy just made a great catch there.”
(on the offense) “We didn’t win at the line of scrimmage in any way remotely needed. We haven’t run the ball on offense, we haven’t pass protected, and we haven’t thrown accurately with any consistency. In the end, we haven’t produced.”
“Our schedule is what our schedule is. What we needed to do today was to improve on some things we had identified. We did improve on special teams. The defense did improve, but the offense, obviously, O for the season.”
DL Rob Schroeder:
(on Damien Rhodes) “Big plays are the name of the game and he had a heluva game. Our job was to stop him and we didn’t get it done.”
“We had Syracuse at only 7-0 and we felt we could play with them at that point, but the big plays just killed us – on the long runs, some people just broke down.”
(on blocking kicks):
“It’s just a knack that I have, just getting off the ball, watching the ball being snapped, staying low and getting ready when the ball is kicked. I really can’t explain why I have nine blocks. I can’t really tell you. Coming here, they’ve given me the opportunity to go block the kick and that’s what I do.”
QB Drew Willy:
“I think we have a lot of great talent around. We just have to start putting it all together and I think it will come along.”
“I’ve been learning a lot more, getting into my progressions and my reads. I know where to go with the ball more now since working on my first progression, second progression. Coach Best and Coach Hofher have really helped me out coming in as a freshman.”
(on how poised he seemed once he entered the game):
“It’s just a football field. I don’t really listen to the crowd or anything. It’s just our team versus their team.”
(on whether he thinks he will get the starting nod in Buffalo’s next game):
“I’m just going to play hard this week and if they call on me, I’ll be ready to go.”
DE Aaron Sanders:
(on what positives the Buffalo players can take from their first two games):
“The score wasn’t indicative of how our offense or defense played. On the plays where they had the big, long runs, we made mistakes. We just weren’t where we were supposed to be. So, I think once we come in and watch the game film, we can say hey, we played with them. We made mistakes here and there, but overall, we were in the game. I think that’s the positive outlook on our two losses.”
