Ryan Powell was a four-time All-American who ranks among the great lacrosse players to wear an Orange uniform. In his senior year, he received the Lt. Raymond Enners Award (Outstanding Player – Division I) and the Jack Turnball Award (Outstanding Attackman – Division I). In NCAA Tournament play, he is tied for third among SU players with the most assists (10 in 1999) and tied for fourth with most points (18 in 2000). Powell ranks third on SU’s career NCAA assist list with 24.
Powell ranks among Syracuse’s best in many of the all-time categories. He is tied for second, along with older brother Casey, on SU’s career points list with 287. They are only preceded by younger brother, Michael, with 307. Ryan also graces SU’s single season points list three times, tying for second (96 in 2000), tying for seventh (85 in 1999) and placing 20th (73 in 1998). He scored 10 points in a single game twice in his career (against Rutgers in 1999 and Hobart in 2000), tying for 10th on the Orange all-time list. He scored 33 points in his freshman season, ranking him 16th among first-year players for the Orange.
Powell ranks eighth on SU’s career goal list with 137 and ranks 16th on the single season goal list with 45 (2000). He also ranks fifth on SU’s career assist list with 150, placing him in between his brothers. He graces SU’s single season assist list three times, ranking fifth in 2000 (51), eighth in 1999 (46) and tied for 19th in 1998 (36). He had seven assists in 1999 versus Loyola, placing him sixth on the single game assist list.
In 2006, Ryan played for the U.S. in the World Games in 2006 with Casey, Michael and two other former Orange lacrosse players.
Senior Year (2000): One of five captains…STX/USILA First-Team All-American…Won the Lt. Raymond Enners Award and the Jack Turnball Award…started in 15 of the 16 games played…team’s leading scorer with 96 points…also led in the team in most goals scored (45) and assists (51)…recovered 58 groundballs, third-best on the team…had a season-high six goals against Hobart in a 18-6 SU win…scored 10 goals and had 8 assists in the NCAA Tournament, including three goals in the championship win against Princeton…scored four goals and had four assists against Georgetown in the quarterfinal game…named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team…played for the North in the North/South Collegiate All-Star game.
Junior Year (1999): SU’s lone representative on the STX/USILA All-American first team…named to the NCAA Lacrosse Championship All-Tournament Team…led SU with four goals and 10 assists for 14 points in four tournament games…led the team in scoring with 85 points (39 goals, 46 assists)…had a career-high seven assists (one shy of the NCAA record) in a victory against unbeaten No. 1 seed Loyola in the NCAA Tournament…finished fourth in the country in points per game (5.46) and assists per game (2.77)… finished tied for 13th in the country in goals per game (2.69)…registered a career-high 10 points versus Rutgers (4-6)…recorded a career-high six goals versus Brown.
Sophomore Year (1998): STX/USILA Third-Team All-American…named to the 1998 NCAA All-Tournament Team…finished the season ranked second in the NCAA in scoring with 5.2 ppg, behind his brother, Casey…tied for second in the NCAA in assists with 2.6 apg…tallied 37 goals and 36 assists.
Freshman Year (1997): Started all 14 games in the midfield…honorable mention All-American in the midfield…fourth on the team in scoring with 33 points…third on the team with 17 assist…took 35 shots, scoring on 45.7%...scored his first collegiate goal in the win against Johns Hopkins…had three goals in four games, including a three-goal, two-assist performance in the NCAA semifinal loss to Maryland…had three goals and two assists in the win against Pennsylvania.
High School: Attended Carthage High School…Four-year letterwinner in lacrosse, football and basketball…had 69 goals and 68 assists as a senior and 438 career points…team captain as a junior and senior…All-American.
Personal: Son of Larry and Sue Powell…four brothers and two sisters…born February 23, 1978 in Watertown, N.Y….older brother, Casey, was a teammate with the Orangemen during Ryan’s first two years…majored in speech communications.
