Roy Simmons Sr. was the Syracuse Lacrosse head coach from 1931 to 1970. His 1957 lacrosse team, which included Jim Brown and former SU head coach and son, Roy Simmons Jr., is considered one of the greatest lacrosse teams of all time. He was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1964. Simmons and his son are the only father-son combination to be inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame. He coached 70 All-Americans and nine players now in the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame and compiled a 253-130-1 record.
Career: Became the backfield coach for Syracuse’s football team immediately after graduation in 1925…Member of the coaching staff of the 1959 National Champions…Coached the boxing team, which won 14 Eastern Championships…Member of the North coaching staff in 1946, ’52, ’54 and ’63…Head coach for the North in 1954 and 1963…Inducted to the US Lacrosse Upstate New York Chapter Hall of Fame in 1990.
