Was it Curtis Brinkley’s fumbles that made you go with Delone Carter?
“That’s how we did it. I was getting ready to put Curtis in right there at the end. I thought Delone was getting tired. Then all of a sudden, he broke the run. He was going to go in possibly the next play.”
You definitely took him out of the game because of the fumbles?
“No, Delone was producing now. He was going. At the same time, you could tell that Curtis was not on his A-game. He wasn’t the only one. Trust me.”
Curtis gave you a great return there.
“He did a great job. He did a great job on that. Curtis has had fine weeks. As he just said to you, It wasn’t going his way today. Delone stepped up. That’s a big thing. It is nice to see.”
Talk about Delone Carter’s game.
“You guys see it as much as I do. He did some very, very good things. He broke outside, ran around their defense, cut back up underneath their defense and took some good hits. I don’t know. How many times did he carry the ball? 20 times. I was very impressed. I’m happy for him. Delone is a wonderful kid. He is a great kid. I shouldn’t say kid. They’re young me. I’m happy for him. He came to Syracuse. He talked about it the other day that this is a special place to him. I think people are going to see more of the same from him. I believe that.”
Would you consider changing your running backs?
“I am not even going to talk about it now.”
Are you happy with this one?
“Let me tell you something, we are 3-2. 3-2 and we did not play our game. There is a lot to be said about our football team in regards to that. They still when they had to, had a fourth and inches stand and then came right back and ran that ball down there and score a touchdown. In the second overtime, I am impressed by that. I wasn’t impressed by the way we played the game today.”
Any update on Rice Moss’ injury.
“No, I haven’t gotten a total update at all on Rice really.”
Did it happen on the play when he caught the ball?
“I think it did.”
You gave up a lot of yards on defense today.
“We did not play good on defense. We had spurts when we did. I think it is very obvious that we did not play our best. They had a couple of runs there early. Number 11 (Devin Moore) broke out. Let me tell you, he is a good player. I knew that. We studied him again last night. Went back again and just watched him for about 15 plays just to study his behavior. We have all week but he got one out. The fake punt got us. A couple of the passes there at the end, we should have played them better.”
How strange was that third quarter?
“I wish I could tell when the third quarter was. I really don’t know. I really don’t. I would have to look at the plays. I get immersed as you might be able to tell.”
You don’t seem too happy about being 3-2.
“I am worn out is what I am. I am worn out. That game, it drains you in every way. I am very, very, very pleased that we won that football game. That we won it in overtime and that we overcame a lot of obstacles that we put in front of ourselves. That is great. That is absolutely great. At the same time, I take my hat off to Wyoming because they gave everything they had. I hate to say better them than us. They lost to Virginia in overtime on the road. It is tough on them. They showed what they are made of. They are going to bounce back. They are a good football team.”
Before the fourth and inches, what did you tell your defense?
“We were trying to figure out what they were going to do as personnel movement and different people. So we were really talking about what we were going to do. Was it this or that? That is basically what we were talking about. There was no time for a rah-rah right then. It was time for them to put up or shut up right there. They did a real fine job.”
What was your take on the receiving core?
“I’m just glad to see Tom Ferron catching some more balls. We believe in the tight end. I keep getting these e-mails from people saying that we are committing fouls for throwing to the tight end. I didn’t know that was something that didn’t happen before. When Rice (Moss) went down, we lost two experienced players for a period of time right there. For much, I don’t know. I knew for the game he was out. We had to do some reshuffling. Lavar (Lobdell) had to move over to the opposite position. He had spent very little time practicing on during the week. We had to make some adjustments at those spots.”
Are you surprised they didn’t take that penalty before the Patrick Shadle field goal?
“I don’t know that. I wondered what they were going to do there. I was kind of thinking that they were probably going to take it and move it back. That is what I thought.”
What would you have done?
“At the time, I would have moved it back. I think it sounds better. He made it, didn’t he? Not that I am second-guessing Joe Glenn. He will be after my tail.”
