For Starters
Junior quarterback Cameron Dantley made his first career start Saturday against USF. He replaced the injured Andrew Robinson in SU’s first offensive group. Redshirt freshman Tucker Baumbach made the first start of his career at left tackle.
Dantley registered his first career 200-yard passing performance in the contest. He was 21-for-38 for 276 yards, one touchdown and an interception. His 21 completions tied him for ninth on the Orange’s single-game record list.
The Orange went with five defensive backs on USF’s first offensive possession. Redshirt freshman Nico Scott earned his first career starting nod in the defensive backfield. Freshman Mike Mele also got the first start of his career at linebacker.
Mele made a personal-best 10 tackles versus the Bulls.
Suter Best In BIG EAST History
Freshman kick returner Max Suter set the BIG EAST single-season record for kickoff return yards Saturday against USF. Suter returned a school-record eight kickoffs for 168 yards and now has 1,042 kickoff return yards for the season. He surpassed the previous record of 922 yards set by Will Blackmon of Boston College in 2003.
Suter also became the conference and Orange single-season leader in kickoffs returned. He has returned 40 kickoffs in 2007. The previous SU record was 33 by Qadry Ismail in 1989 and the previous BIG EAST was 37 by Nathan Jones of Rutgers in 2001.
Long Ties Longest Punt In Orange History
Freshman punter Rob Long tied the longest punt in school history with a 73-yard boot in the second quarter versus USF. He tied Sean Reali for the record. Reali had a 73-yarder against Clemson in the 1996 Gator Bowl.
Long also cracked SU’s top 10 in season punting yardage against the Bulls. He punted seven times for 307 yards and now has 2,605 punting yards for the year, which ranks sixth on the Orange’s all-time season ledger.
Shadles Crushes One
Junior kicker Pat Shadle drilled a career-long 50-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to get SU on the scoreboard. It was the 20th field goal of at least 50 yards in school history and the first since Collin Barber hit a 50-yarder against Boston College in 2002. Shadle’s previous career-best was a 46-yard field goal at Wake Forest in 2006.
All He Does Is Catch Touchdowns
Sophomore receiver Mike Williams caught a touchdown pass for the seventh consecutive game Saturday, extending his school record streak. The score pulled the Orange within 17, 27-10, in the third quarter. It was Williams’ eighth TD reception of the season moving him into a four-way tie for fifth on SU’s single-season record list. Williams has 12 career touchdown catches, tying him with Mike Siano for seventh all-time at Syracuse.
Williams tied his career high with eight receptions for 99 yards. His 653 yards this season is the fourth-highest total by a sophomore receiver in school history and the most by a second-year SU player since Quinton Spotwood had 797 in 1997.
Center Fields
Senior safety Joe Fields established a new career best with 15 total tackles against the Bulls. He had eight solos and seven tackle assists. He also made his team-leading fourth interception of the season in the contest. Fields has eight career picks.
Csonka Honored
College and Pro Football Hall-of-Famer Larry Csonka was honored at halftime against USF. The former Orange running back’s #39 jersey was retired and he was presented with a leather SU letterman’s jacket.
Csonka played for Syracuse from 1965-67 and was a two-time All-American. He still ranks third on SU’s career rushing record list (2,934, yards) and is second in school history with 15 career 100-yard rushing games. As a member of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, Csonka led the team to a Super Bowl crown and an undefeated season in 1972.
