Casey Powell was the first of the famous Powell brothers to wear number 22 for the Orange. He was a four-time All-American and member of the NCAA All-Tournament team. He was a two-time winner of the Lt. Raymond Enners Award, which recognizes the most outstanding player in Division I lacrosse. As a versatile field player, Casey received the Lt. Donald C. McLaughlin, Jr. Award for most outstanding midfielder in 1996 and the Jack Turnball Award for most outstanding attackman in 1998. He also played for the United States in the World Games in 1998 and in 2006, when his brothers, Ryan and Michael, joined him.
Casey holds the record at SU for most assists in a NCAA Tournament game when he scored eight against Loyola in 1997. He also ranks fourth on SU’s career NCAA Tournament assists list (22) and is tied for fifth for most NCAA Tournament points (45). He holds the record for single-game points with 13, which he scored against Virginia in 1997. In the same year, he scored 83 points, tying for 10th place on the single season points list. He is also tied for 13th on the same list for his 78 points in 1998. As a freshman, he scored 67 points, ranking him fourth all-time among other first-year players. Casey scored 278 points in his four years, placing him second on the Orange’s career list, in between Michael (1st) and Ryan (3rd).
Powell scored nine goals against Towson State in 1998, tying the record for single game goals. In 1997, he scored seven goals against Virginia, tying for the eighth spot on the same list. He ranks twice on SU’s single season goals list; he is tied for 17th with 44 (1998) and ranked 20th with 43 (1997). Overall, Casey ranks fourth in career goals with 158.
He also is tied for fourth and sixth on SU’s single game assists list with eight (1997) and seven (1996), respectively. In 1997, Powell had 40 assists, tying him for 13th on the single season list and in 1998, he had 34, tying him for 22nd. Overall, he ranks sixth on SU’s career assists list with 129, which puts him just below Ryan and Michael.
Senior Year (1998): One of three team captains…named first-team All-American… won the Lt. Raymond Enners Award…also won the Jack Turnball Award for outstanding attackman in Division I…named to the NCAA All-Tournament team…started and played in all 14 games…team-leading scorer with 78 points…also led the team in goals with 44 and second in assists with 34…recovered 66 groundballs, highest on team…had a season-high nine goals against Towson in a Syracuse 18-12 win…had five games of five-or-more goals…scored three goals and had three assists in the quarterfinal win against Virginia…had two assists in the 11-10 semifinal loss to Princeton…played for the North in the North/South Collegiate All-Star game.
Junior Year (1997): One of two collegiate players on the USA National Team…started in all 14 games at attack…also played some in the midfield…first-team All-American selection…won the Lt. Raymond Enners Award…led the team and the nation in scoring with 83 points…also led the team in goals and assists…opened the season with his best performance to date—a seven goal, six assist game in the win against Virginia…the 13 points set a Syracuse record…career-high eight assists in the NCAA Quarterfinal victory against Loyola…named to the NCAA All-Tournament team…had four goals and five assists in the win against Yale…had five goals in the win against Pennsylvania…had six games of four-or-more goals…led SU with 82 groundballs.
Sophomore Year (1996): First-team All-American at midfield and recipient of the Lt. Donald C. McLaughlin, Jr. Award for outstanding midfielder in Division I…named to the NCAA All-Tournament team…SU’s third-leading scorer…32 goals, 27 assists and 59 points…seven assists in the win at Penn…had five games of three-or-more goals, including four goals against Cornell and Princeton…started and scored in all 15 games.
Freshman Year (1995): Second-team All-American and named to the NCAA All-Tournament team…led SU in scoring, with 39 goals and 28 assists…gathered 51 groundballs…had two goals and two assists in his first collegiate game at Georgetown…had five goals and two assists in the win against Yale…scored four goals in both the Hobart and Princeton wins…had three goals and four assists in the semifinal win over Virginia…saw some action in the midfield at the end of the season…scored game-winning goal in the win at Hobart…scored at least one goal and two points in each game.
High School: Attended Carthage High School…four-year lacrosse letterwinner…also letterwinner in football and basketball…held every lacrosse record at Carthage…scored 292 goals in his career and is believed to be the leading scorer in New York State history…won gold medal at 1993 Empire State games…scored four goals in the North-South All-Star game…two-time All-American…team captain in lacrosse as a junior and senior and football and basketball captain as a senior.
