PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Grace Anne McCooey buried the go-ahead goal with 8:11 to play and No. 12 Syracuse University field hockey held on for a 3-2 win over Ohio State on Friday, improving to 3-0 on the young season.

Aubrey Turner and Hattie Madden also scored for the Orange (3-0), who trailed twice before pulling away in the fourth quarter. Sammie Goin, Taylor Bigbie and Catalina Pravda each picked up an assist, and Jessie Eiselin went the distance in net, making six saves to secure the win.

Ohio State (1-2) got goals from Sienna Golden and Raleigh Kerst, with Phillippa Jowett and Anne Marie Krebs assisting. Avery Alleva turned away five shots in 56:29 of work before the Buckeyes pulled her for an extra attacker in the final minutes.

How it Happened

Ohio State struck first, with Golden converting a feed from Jowett off a penalty corner just 3:50 into the game for a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse answered quickly, as Bigbie found a diving Hattie Madden in the circle for the equalizer at 9:55, the second goal of the season for the senior forward.
The Orange defense and Eiselin locked in from there, holding the Buckeyes without a goal for the next 30 minutes despite a pair of Ohio State penalty corners.
Syracuse grabbed its first lead in the 30th minute when Goin set up Turner with a long-distance pass, who buried her second goal of the year at 29:49 to make it 2-1.
Ohio State battled back in the second half, with Kerst finishing off a Krebs assist at 40:16 to tie the game at 2-2 off one of the Buckeyes' 11 penalty corners on the day.
The go-ahead goal came in the fourth quarter, as Pravda found McCooey for the finish at 51:49, the first goal as an Orange for the graduate transfer. Turner initially hit a reverse that was stopped by Alleva before Pravda tipped the pass over to McCooey.
Ohio State pushed hard down the stretch, firing off a flurry of penalty corners in the final five minutes, but Eiselin stood tall with three late saves to preserve the win.
Trailing late, Ohio State pulled Alleva for an extra attacker with 3:31 remaining, but Syracuse's defense closed it out.

Shots were even at 15 apiece, with each team also putting nine shots on goal.
Syracuse held a corner-count disadvantage but made it count, converting on two of its eight penalty corners while Ohio State managed just one goal on 11 corner opportunities.
Eiselin played all 60 minutes in net for the second time this season, while Alleva's 56:29 before being pulled reflected the late push by the Buckeyes.
Each team was whistled for a green card; Ohio State's Maddie Bogle in the 49th minute and Syracuse's Belle van de Pas in the 57th.
Syracuse improved to 3-0 with all three wins coming by a combined margin of just three goals, continuing an early-season trend of tight, one-possession finishes.
