Dennis is active with the Vera House Foundation and is a board member of the Onondaga County NAACP and the City of Syracuse and Onondaga County Youth Bureau. He serves on the city county Drug and Alcohol Commission Criminal Justice Committee, the advisory board for Neighborhood Watch, the Youth Violence Coalition Committee and Syracuse Gold Association Youth Committee. Dennis was a member of Mayor Tom Young’s Minority and Youth Sub-Cabinets. He belongs to the International, New York State and Central New York Associations of Chiefs of Police and several other professionally affiliated associations. Dennis is the recipient of the PBA Merit/Valor Medal, the City of Syracuse Meritorious Service Medal for Valor, Governor Mario Cuomo’s Certificate of Merit for Bravery and numerous commendations and honors. He was inducted into the Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
Dennis is a board member of both the Varsity Club and Hardwood Fund and belongs to the SU alumni Association. He supports the SU Orange Pack and SU Basketball.

A star for the Orangemen, Dennis DuVal was selected a 1974 first team All-American by They Sporting News and went on to play professional basketball.
In 1976, Dennis joined the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy. He moved to the Syracuse Police Department in 1978, serving as a police officer (1978-80), a detective in the criminal investigation division (1980-86), a detective in the community service bureau (1986-89), and a shift supervisor sergeant (1989-90). In 1990 he was promoted to deputy chief of police for the community services bureau. In 1992, Dennis became chief of detectives for the investigations bureau responsible for the criminal investigations division, special investigations division and crime lab division. He is in charge of coordinating cooperative investigations with external agencies and is commanding officer of the SWAT team.
