Former Syracuse head football coach Richard F. “Dick” MacPherson. MacPherson started at SU in 1981, the second year of the Carrier Dome, and returned the Orange football program to the forefront of the national football scene. He took teams to five bowl games, posting a 3-1-1 record, and compiled a 66-46-4 record. MacPherson was the consensus National Coach of the Year in 1987 when he led the Orange to an undefeated season and tie against Auburn in the Sugar Bowl. MacPherson has served on the board of many community/civic organizations, including the Salvation Army, Easter Seals, American and Juvenile Diabetes and New York State Parks System.
