1999 Letterwinner of Distinction
No one has given more toSyracuse University than “Joe Z”. He has been associated with Syracuse for more than 45 years, as a student, athlete, coach and administrator. Szombathy graduated from Syracuse University in 1953 receiving a bachelor’s degree in arts and sciences. He later received a master’s degree in education from Muhlenberg College in 1955. While a student at SU Joe received a varsity letter for football from 1950 – 52. In his senior year he was co-captain and helped lead the team to its first post-season appearance in the Orange Bowl. He began his coaching career at Syracuse University in 1957 under Ben Schwartzwalder. While coaching for 17 years “Joe Z” helped the Orangemen win a National Championship in 1959 and also coached SU in seven bowl games. After leaving the sidelines, Szombathy took over an administrative position as Associate Athletic Director. He also served as executive director of the Varsity Club, the Football Lettermen’s Club and the Orange Pack. Since starting the Orange Pack in 1974 with 1,000 members Joe has seen the organization grow to more than 6,000 members and raise $3 million annually. In 1989, Szombathy was named a “Letterwinner of Distinction”. This year he will be honored upon his retirement for his years of dedication and service.
