Active in both honorary and social fraternities, Ken Buhrmaster was president of the men’s student senate and commodore of the crew.
Currently Ken is chairman of the board of the J.H Buhrmaster Company, Inc., a fuel and heating equipment supplier in the Capital district and surrounding areas. He is also chairman of the board of directors of the First National Bank of Scotia, which includes nine offices in Albany, Schenectady and Saratoga counties. He is a former director and officer of the Schenectady Chamber of Commerce. Ken has been involved in education leadership since he was first elected to the Scotia School Board in 1948. He has held offices in state and national educational organizations, including an appointment by Governor Nelson E. Rockefeller in 1966 to represent New York on the Education Commission of the States and a term as president of the National School Boards Association. Ken has also been involved in banking and retirement systems, serving as president of the New York State Bankers Association and as a director of the American Bankers Association.
Ken’s civic activities include former chairman of the board of the Schenectady County Economic Development Corporation, president and trustee of the Capital District YMCA, past president of the Scotia Rotary Club and membership on the boards of the Schenectady Foundation and Ellis Hospital Foundation.
Among Ken’s honors are, the George Arents Pioneer Medal from Syracuse University, the Distinguished Service Award from the New York State School Boards Association, the Alfred E. Smith Award for Outstanding Service in Education in New York State from the New York State Teachers’ Association, and the Distinguished Service Award from SUNY Albany along with service awards from the Schenectady Chamber of Commerce and the Capital District YMCA. In 1987, the Village of Scotia presented Ken with the Alexander Glen Award for long and faithful service to the people of the village.
