PEETOOM A FINALIST FOR LOWE’S SENIOR CLASS AWARD
Syracuse senior defender Brad Peetoom (Abbotsford, British Columbia) was selected on Wednesday, Oct. 17 as one of 10 finalists nationwide for the first Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for men’s soccer. The award will be presented to an NCAA Division I men’s senior soccer player who excels both on and off the field.
Fan balloting will be combined with votes from coaches, media and sponsors to determine the recipient of the award. Candidates were selected based on personal qualities that define a complete student-athlete. While the on-the-field performance during their collegiate careers is a factor in determining candidates and the eventual winner, their personal character and off-the-field achievements in the classroom and community are major areas of focus.
Peetoom, a three-time team Defensive MVP and two-time captain, has been a part of a defense that has posted 18 shutouts since 2004, including five this season. Peetoom also has 12 career points. Earlier this year, he was named to the Wolstein Classic All-Tournament Team and the Soccer America National Team of the Week for his role in shutouts of Penn State and Ohio State.

THREE NAMED TO WOLSTEIN CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
The Orange placed three players on the Wolstein Classic All-Tournament Team. Sophomore forward Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) was named to the squad after having a hand in three of SU’s four goals in Friday’s thrashing of Penn State. Woodruff assisted on both of the Orange’s first-half tallies, including junior Spencer Schomaker’s (Seattle, Wash.) game-winner. It was the first multi-assist game of Woodruff’s career. He also netted an unassisted score in the 53rd minute to seal the Orange’s season-opening victory.
In addition to Woodruff, senior defender Brad Peetoom (Abbotsford, British Columbia) and junior backline mate Karol Wasielewski (Gdynia, Poland) were also picked to the all-tournament squad. The duo teamed up for SU’s fourth goal against the Nittany Lions when Wasielewski headed in a rebounded shot by Peetoom in the 68th minute. The goal was the first for Wasielewski and came in his first collegiate match. As center backs, the pair also organized SU’s defense, which did not surrender a goal in 200 minutes of action.
OFFENSE EXPLODES VERSUS PENN STATE
Syracuse tallied four goals in its season-opening win against Penn State on Aug. 31. It was the most goals for the Orange since it netted four scores in a 4-0 shutout of Cornell on Oct. 22, 2003. Friday’s four goals represented the most for Syracuse in a season-opening game under head coach Dean Foti, who took over the team in 1991. The Orange recorded a 5-1 victory in the 1990 campaign starter against Oneonta under former coach Tim Hankinson.
SEASON-OPENING SUCCESS
The Orange’s 4-0 victory against Penn State in its opening match of the Wolstein Classic marked the third consecutive year SU has begun the season with a win. The Orange defeated Niagara at home, 3-1, to start the 2006 campaign and shut out Marist, 1-0, at home in the 2005 season-opener. The triumph also represented the Orange’s first road season-opening win since 1995 when SU knocked off Monmouth at the Umbro Classic hosted by St. John’s.
LANDMARK WIN
Syracuse’s 2007 season-opener against Penn State marked the first time the Orange squared off against a Big Ten opponent since it played Ohio State in 1997 at the New England Ford Dealers Soccer Classic in Storrs, Conn. Its victory against the Nittany Lions was SU’s first against a current Big Ten member since it defeated Penn State, 2-1, in 1932.
APT PUPIL
Backup goalie Robert Smith (Niagara Falls, Ontario) made his first career start a memorable one. Smith played all 90 minutes and made three saves against Penn State to earn his first career shutout. It was also the second win of Smith’s career. In 2006, he played 45 minutes against Binghamton and picked up the victory.
Smith also started the Wolstein Classic championship match against Ohio State on Sept. 2 and played the first 79:13 without allowing a goal before he was replaced.
For his career, Smith has logged 214:13 in net and has eight saves. He has yet to give up a score.
A COUPLE OF FIRSTS
A pair of players recorded the first goals of their careers in SU’s victory against Penn State on Aug. 31. Sophomore forward Tom Perevegyencev (Budapest, Hungary) made his first collegiate appearance and tallied a goal. Perevegyencev took a pass from Woodruff and converted a breakaway scoring chance 43 minutes into the contest to put the Orange up, 2-0.
Wasielewski also tallied his first career goal in the match. A transfer from AWFiS Gdansk in Poland, Wasielewski started the first collegiate match of his career and netted the Orange’s fourth goal of the evening.
MORE FIRSTS
In addition to Wasielewski, sophomore transfer Brien Chamney (Oakville, Ontario) also earned a start against Penn State in his first collegiate match.
Three other players saw the game field for the first time in their Orange careers against the Nittany Lions: redshirt freshman Ryan McCormick (Cranston, R.I.), sophomore transfer Kenny Caceros (Nepean, Ontario) and freshman Justin Arena (Potomac, Md.).
