March 31, 2008
The Orange softball team began BIG EAST play with three wins in four games. On Saturday, March 29, SU unloaded for seven runs in two consecutive games to cruise to 7-2 wins at Rutgers. SU totaled 27 hits in the two games and was led by five different student-athletes who produced four hits. On Sunday, March 30, Syracuse split with Villanova with a 4-1 win in the first game and a 2-0 loss in the second.
Senior Chanel Roehner earned two wins in the circle and is now 5-5 this year. She carried a no-hitter deep into the fourth inning against Villanova and only allowed one hit into the sixth. Junior catcher Amy Kelley extended her home run streak to four games – dating back to the March 16 game against Binghamton – by homering during the first three games of the weekend. She finished the four games with a 1.182 slugging percentage. Junior shortstop Jamie Kelling led the team with seven hits, while junior first baseman Nicole Miller was first with six RBI.

The Orange cruised to four victories in during the five-game College of Charleston Classic (Mar. 14-16) behind a .329 team batting average and a 1.89 team ERA. Three of SU's games went in to extra innings with the Orange prevailing three times. Syracuse opened with a 2-1, eight-inning victory against Binghamton and followed with a 12-4, six-inning routing of host school Charleston. On Saturday, the Orange got its first taste of BIG EAST competition when it faced St. John's in a non-conference contest. Syracuse prevailed 3-2 in nine innings, but lost to Charleston, 2-0, during the late game. SU and BU met again on Sunday and went into extra innings again. Two runs in the top of the eighth secured the Orange's 6-5 victory.
Junior shortstop Jamie Kelling set a school record for hits in a game when she unloaded five hits in SU's win against St. John's. She went 5-for-5, including the game-winning single to score a run in the bottom of the ninth. She finished the week batting .545 (12-for-22) by registering a hit in every game and extending her hitting streak to a team-best five games. Junior catcher Amy Kelley totaled eight hits in 18 at-bats (.444), producing two RBI and her team-best third homerun of the season.

The Orange (3-15) earned its first victories of the season at the USF Invitational from Friday, Mar. 7 through Sunday, Mar. 9. Senior Chanel Roehner pitched a complete game to guide SU to a 3-2 win against Sam Houston on Friday and earned its third win of the weekend by pitching a complete-game shutout in a 10-0 win against Quinnipiac on Sunday. SU added a win against Fairfield, 6-3, on Saturday. Roehner also made her mark at the plate by batting .389 (7-for-18) with three runs and a team-best six RBI.

The bats of freshman outfielder Rachel Helman and sophomore outfielder Ev Anderson came alive as Helman led the team with a .571 average (4-for-7) with four runs scored, while Anderson posted a .429 average (3-for-7) with one run, a double and one RBI.

GOING DEEP
Juniors Jorden Rosen and Amy Kelley each went yard on Saturday at the NFCA Leadoff (Feb. 29 - Mar. 2) at Columbus, Ga. Rosen hit a two-out shot over the leftfield fence with Kelley on first in the second inning against No. 18/18 Mississippi State. Kelley sent a one-out, solo shot deep against Nebraska to put the Orange on the board.
GETTING THINGS GOING
Junior catcher Amy Kelley, who caught every inning, led the team with a .333 batting average, a .583 slugging percentage and a .429 on-base percentage and tied for first two RBI and four hits at the NFCA Leadoff. He hit her first homerun of the season during the second inning against Nebraska. She caught two runners stealing.

PIRATE CLASSIC RECAP
Syracuse was handed four losses at the Pirate Classic hosted by East Carolina from Saturday, Feb. 23 through Sunday, Feb. 24. The Orange lost its first game, 7-2, to Appalachian State, but rebounded with a strong showing against ECU, taking the Pirates to eight innings, but eventually losing, 4-3. On Sunday, SU lost to Purdue, 6-2, and to Penn State, 8-0, in five innings.
The Orange was led by senior Rachel Tilford, who amassed four hits, including her 15th-career double, and drove in a team-best four RBI. She singled up the middle in the sixth inning against ECU to score two runs and tie the score, 3-3. The next day against Purdue, she singled in the first to again score two runs as the Orange jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Classmate Chanel Roehner also helped the Orange's cause by going 4-for-12 with a double and three runs scored.

OPENING WEEKEND
Rain slowed down things at the Getterman Classic hosted by Baylor from Friday, Feb. 15 through Sunday, Feb. 17. The Orange was scheduled to play six games during the three-day affair, but two games were cancelled on Saturday because of heavy downpours.
In the season-opener, SU lost to Centenary 4-3 after a seventh-inning comeback by the Ladies. No. 7/10 Baylor defeated Syracuse 8-0 in six innings during the late game. Saturday's games were a wash and the Orange returned on Sunday with losses against Purdue, 10-0, in five innings and against the Bears, 6-1.
GETTING THEIR FEET WET
During the season-opener freshman third baseman Hallie Gibbs hit a homerun in her very first collegiate at-bat, becoming the first SU freshman to accomplish the feat. Gibbs was named to the Getterman Classic All-Tournament Team. Another freshman that had success was utility player Tawni Irvine, who spoiled Baylor's no-hitter on Friday with single in the fifth inning. She finished the weekend going 2-for-6.
MULTI-HITS
Juniors Nicole Miller and Jamie Kelling each tallied multi-hit games during the weekend. Miller was 2-for-3 with two RBI in the Orange's outing against Centenary, while Kelling was 2-for-3 in the second game against the Bears.
