Frank E. Wade, 1897-99
Head Coach
All-Time Record at SU: 17-9-2 (.607)
Frank Wade came to SU after one season at DePauw University, and became the first SU coach to stay at least three seasons. During a game against Colgate in 1897, a newspaper reporter tackled an SU player who was on his way to scoring the game-winning touchdown. The contest ended in a 6-6 tie and the legend of The Colgate "Hoodoo" was born.
Wade won six games in a row in 1898, a team best at that point. The 1898 campaign also marked the first eight-win season for the Orange and included four consecutive shutouts to close out the season and seven overall. Wade was the first of four consecutive SU coaches to start their tenures in victorious shutout fashion.
In 1899, Wade's team played the Syracuse Athletic Association for the last time; the SAA and SU squared off 20 times over the program's first 11 years and the Orange won the series, 11-8-1.
