George O. Redington, 1895-96
Head Coach
All-Time Record at SU: 11-5-4 (.550)
George Redington's SU career, though brief, was successful and helped put the wheels in motion to establish Syracuse as a national power. The fifth head coach in program history, Redington was the first to hold the position for multiple seasons. His first season was the inaugural year of The Oval, the SU campus's first football facility. Prior to 1895, SU played its games in parks throughout the city of Syracuse. The Oval would be SU's home until Archbold Stadium opened in 1907.
The 1895 campaign was highlighted by a four-game win streak, tying a program high. During the four-game tear, SU outscored its opponents by a combined score of 98-0. The season's other two wins also came in the form of shutouts.
After playing St. John's Military Academy to a tie on two occasions in 1895, Redington and the rest of the Orange finally broke through the following year, topping them by a score of 40-0. The 1896 season also was the first time SU played a team from outside the state of New York, falling to Williams (Mass.) on October 17th.
