Winston was the first head coach in team history and notched the school's first win, a 14-0 triumph in the season opener against The Syracuse Athletic Association. Prior to Winston's arrival, the team coached itself for one game in 1889 at Rochester, which it lost. SU adopted Orange as the official school color before the start of the season, a switch from the pink and blue uniforms SU donned in 1889.
