The Syracuse womens rowing squad competed in Boston on Saturday,
March 31 challenging boats from the Boston University, Texas and
Duke. The races were contested on a 2,000-meter course on the
Charles River.
Orangewomen Varsity Eight Continues Winning Ways Defeating Boston,
Texas and Duke
The Orangewomen's varsity eight boat won its third consecutive
race of the season defeating entries from Boston University, the
University of Texas and Duke. The Orangewomen's varsity eight
finished the 2000-meter race 1.8 seconds ahead of BU. Heather
DiLoreto (East Amherst, NY) served as the coxswain. SU's
first-ever first-team All-American Jillian Kott (McLean, VA) was
the stroke and Meredith Kyle (Rochester, NY) was the bow. Alicea
Kochis (Naugatuck, CT) was in the sixth seat and Nicole Garofalo
(Liverpool, NY) rowed in the second seat for the boat, which
finished in 6:45.1. Texas was third at 6:45.9 and Duke placed
fourth in 7:04.9. Last season BU's varsity eight placed seventh at
the NCAA Championships, two places in front of the Orangewomen's
ninth-place finish.
SUs Second Eight Posts First-Place Finish at Boston
The Syracuse second eight won its race defeating Boston, Texas and
Duke, in that order. The Orangewomen's 7:13.6 finish was more than
10 seconds ahead of the second-place BU boat. Lesley Wolf
(Syracuse, NY) rowed in the fifth seat, while Seana Miller (West
Redding, CT) was the stroke.
Orange Fours Place First and Third
Lisa Fackler (Hunt Valley, MD) was the coxswain and Nikki Kuczek
(Liverpool, NY) and Emily Havalchak (Corning, NY) were the stroke
and bow, respectively, for Syracuse's varsity four boat which
finished first in its race. Duke finished second in the varsity
four race, while Syracuse's second four placed third. SU's first
boat won in a time of 8:29.57, while the second boat finished in
8:51.0.
SU Challenges Ivy League Crews
The Orangewomen travel to Derby, CT on April 7 to take on Ivy
League schools, Cornell and Yale.

Orangewomen Open Season With Three Victories in Miami
On Friday, March 16 the Syracuse University womens varsity eight beat Central Florida in a two-way race in the morning and then returned to the water in the afternoon to defeat Miami and Navy. The Orangewomen completed the 2,000-meter course on Indian Creek Lake in Miami, FL in 6:37.07, well ahead of Central Floridas time of 6:59.22. SU improved its time in the afternoon competition, covering the distance in 6:31.00, ahead of Miami (6:49.33) and Navy (6:53.60).
Against Central Florida, the Varsity eight was directed by coxswain Heather DiLoreto (East Amherst, NY) and powered by Jillian Kott (McLean, VA), a 2000 All-American, Katie Modolo (St. Catherines, Ontario), a team co-captain, Alicea Kochis (Naugatuck, CT), Helen Tanger (Amstelveen, The Netherlands), Froukje Wegman (Haastrect, The Netherlands), Racheal Kirchhoff (Juneau, AK), Nicole Garafalo (Liverpool, NY) and Shannon Mercurio (Saranac Lake, NY) in seats eight through bow, respectively. For the race against Miami and Navy Meredith Kyle (Rochester, NY) rowed in the bow instead of Mercurio.
The junior varsity eight, which included coxswain Erin Gallagher (Upper Darby, PA), followed by Seana Miller (West Redding, CT), team co-captain Libby Graves (Holden, MA), Kyle, Lesley Wolf (Syracuse, NY), Odette Mitchell-Servilio (Park Ridge, NJ), Angelique Darling (Brockville, Ontario), Bonnie Chapman (Gainsville, FL) and Chris Getzler (Naperville, IL) in the bow, beat Central Florida, 6:55.25 to 7:16.32 and took second in the afternoon, with a time of 6:49.33. Navy (6:43.33) was first and Miami (7:03.88) was third.
Kott Places at Worlds Largest Indoor Rowing Competition
Syracuse junior and first-ever first-team All-American rower Jillian Kott (McLean, VA) had the best-ever showing for an Orangewoman rower at the CRASH-Bs, the worlds largest indoor rowing competition. Rowing with no affiliation, Kott placed sixth in the international competition of 275 rowers. Kott finished fourth in collegiate level competition. At the Reggie Lewis Track and Field Center on the Northeastern campus in Boston, Kott finished her opening 2000-meter heat in 6:56.5. In the finals Kott finished with a time of 6:58.2.
At the CRASH-Bs rowers race 2000 meters on an ergometer (erg), which is an indoor rowing machine. Previous to the CRASH-Bs, Kott had only once finished in less than seven minutes on the 2000-meters erg test. In Boston, the Syracuse junior finished in the less than seven minutes twice in a four-hour period.
Orangewomen Travel to Boston for Three-Team Race
The rowers take a short hiatus from competition before their next meet. Syracuse faces Boston University and the University of Texas on March 31 in Boston. The races will be contested on the Charles River, BUs home water.

Rowing Closes Fall Season at Foot of the Charles
The varsity eight finished fourth out of 22 crews in the championship eight race at the Foot of the Charles Regatta in Boston on Nov. 11. The boat finished with a time of 13:43.3, behind Brown (13:29.2), Northeastern (13:42.0) and Radcliffe (13:42.5). Boston University was fifth behind SU with a time of 13:51.6. The members of Syracuse's first varsity eight on Saturday were junior coxswain Heather DiLoreto (East Amherst, NY), junior stroke Jillian Kott (McLean, VA), senior Meredith Kyle (Rochester, NY), junior Alicea Kochis (Naugatuck, CT), junior Rachael Kirchhoff (Juneau, AK), sophomore Nicole Garafalo (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool H.S./Syracuse Chargers), junior Helen Tanger (Amstelveen, The Netherlands), junior Froukje Wegman (Haastrect, The Netherlands) and senior bow Kathryn Modolo (St. Catherine's, Ontario).
Second Eight and Freshman Eight Post Top-10 Finishes
SU's second eight turned in an eighth-place performance, beating every other second boat except for Brown which came in seventh. In the 41-boat freshman eight race, Syracuse A came in sixth with a time of 15:26.1. Syracuse B was 19th with a time of 16:28.8 and the Syracuse C squad was 33rd in a time of 17:36.1.

Varsity Four Wins Head of the Schuylkill
The men's crew team had two boats finish in first place at the Head of the Schuylkill in Philadelphia on Saturday, Oct. 28. In a 48-boat race, the men's varsity four finished first with a time of 14:46.1. The top-place showing is the first-ever for a Syracuse varsity four at the Head of the Schuylkill. Peter Romano (East Amherst, NY) served as the coxswain, Andy Berster (Sarasota, FL) was the stroke and John Merzig (Albany, NY) was the bow. Chris Liwski (Sarasota, FL) was in the third seat and Kevin Klein (Drexel Hill, PA) rowed in the second seat.
Club Eight Earns Victory
For the first time since 1990, Syracuse's second eight captured first place in the club eight race at the Head of the Schuylkill. Abe Yoffe (Baltimore, MD) was the coxswain, Sean Ring (Hyde Park, NY) was the stroke and Scott VandeVusse (Grosse Pointe, MI) was the bow in the boat that finished with a time of 13:32.3 in the 34-boat competition. Rowing in seats two through seven were: Andy Johnson (Oak Ridge, TN), Matt Costigan (Wexford, PA), Brian White (Marlboro, MA), Mike Grynirk (Easton, MA), Matt Scott (Millbrook, NY) and Pat Mahardy (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool).
Orangemen Varsity Eight Claim Third
In the championship eight contest, the Orangemen's varsity eight placed third, which is the best showing ever by a Syracuse varsity eight in the championship race at the event. Eric Miller (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) was the coxswain, Karl Sudar (Springfield, VA) was the stroke and John Stephanik (Marietta, OH) was the bow in the boat that finished with a time of 13:07.8. In seats two through seven for the Orange were; Jason Bourcier (Greenland, NH), Kevin Boyle (Emmaus, PA), Jay Abbott (Augusta, ME), Steve Boselli (Bedford, NH), Josh Stratton (Hyde Park, NY) and Matt Heumann (Burnt Hills, NY), respectively.
Orangewomen Win Varsity Eight
Syracuse had a boat finish first in the championship eight and a boat place second in the club eight at the Head of Schuylkill in Philadelphia on Saturday, October 28. In the championship eight the Orangewomen finished with a time of 14:37.0. In the 2.75-mile head race, Syracuse collided with Pennsylvania's boat twice and finished the contest with a hole in their boat. Heather Diloreto (East Amherst, NY) was the coxswain, and Jillian Kott (McLean, VA) was the stroke and captain. Kathryn Modolo (St. Catharines, Ontario) was the bow on the first-place boat. Froujke Wegman (Haastrect, The Netherlands), Helen Tanger, (Amstelveen, The Netherlands), Nicole Garafalo (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Rachael Kirchhoff (Juneau, AK), Alicea Kochis (Naugatuck, CT) and Meredith Kyle (Rochester, NY) rowed in seats two through seven, respectively. In Philadelphia, the varsity eight finished 12 seconds ahead of Michigan State. The Spartans finished two seconds ahead of the Orangewomen at last year's NCAA championship.
Orangewomen Club Eight Places Second
The second eight for the Orangewomen placed second in the club eight contest with a time of 15:30.3. In a boat that was made up of sophomores, Erin Gallagher (Upper Darby, PA) served as the coxswain, Nicole Kuczek (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was the stroke and Bonnie Chapman (Gainsville, FL) was the bow. Sarah Friguletto (Scotia, NY), Morgan Welch (Still River, MA), Lesley Wolf (Syracuse, NY/Henninger), Angelique Darling (Brockville, Ontario), Seana Miller (West Redding, CT) and Shannon Mercurio (Saranac Lake, NY/) rowed in seats two through seven, respectively.
