Syracuse vs. Cornell
April 15, 2009
Carrier Dome/Syracuse, N.Y.
Halley Quillinan, Junior, Attack
On Cornell’s scoring run in the second half:
“I think when Cornell went on its run we just wanted to really buckle down and play disciplined. We wanted to do the things we were doing in the first half – getting the draw controls and the ground balls, causing turnovers, and really protecting the ball. During that lapse, we really weren’t doing those things. When coach called the timeout, he was telling us to pull it out and finish it and really take control of the game.
“I think it was a mental lapse, Cornell was just beating us to everything. They were beating us to ground balls and beating us to midfield. They’re a talented team and they played great.”
On if she knew that Cornell was a young team:
“Honestly, I couldn’t tell. They played great and showed a lot of experience out there. I was really impressed with how they played.”
Katie Rowan, Senior, Attack
On her six assists during the game:
“I think it was just driving to the net hard and keeping my head up when the slides were coming. Girls were really getting open and they were finishing their shots. It was great.”
On her shooting during the game:
“I had some shots but I wasn’t shooting very well. I was shooting right at the goalie. I was getting the looks but I wasn’t finishing. They had some great defenders and they really put a lot of pressure on the attackers. They did a real great job on defense.”
On playing her last regular-season game in the Carrier Dome:
“Before the game, the seniors were talking about what it was going to be like. It was pretty emotional because we’ve been here for four years and we’ve all had some great experiences. It’s sad, but hopefully we’ll get one more game here in the NCAA tournament. It’s been a great career here at the Dome.”
Bridget Hamm, Senior, Defense
On Cornell’s offense:
“They definitely did a lot of one-on-ones. They drove in really hard and I think we had a few mental lapses. They got a couple goals off of one-on-ones and they definitely did a lot of picking in the middle, which we worked on defending all week. So we did pretty well at that but we did have a few mental breakdowns.”
On how the defense is playing:
“I’m not worried. I have all the confidence in the world in my team. I think all we can do is look at our past games and focus and do better the next game. That’s really all you can do.”
On new players filling in on defense:
“It definitely takes some time to adjust. The communication was okay, but you can always improve on that. We all have confidence in each other and as long as we keep practicing hard, I think we’ll be successful.”
