Tutoring Program - The functions of tutoring are varied, but the major objectives are to:
1. provide reinforcement of classwork and class assignments;
2. clarify information;
3. assist with remediation of background knowledge;
4. model successful learning and study strategies for a particular discipline;
5. assist the student-athlete in becoming an active participant in the learning process. Tutorial services are available to all student-athletes upon request. Tutoring sessions may be conducted at team study tables, in small groups, or on an individual basis.
Some tutors will be assigned to team study tables to work with a number of different student-athletes. Some student-athletes will be assigned to meet with specific tutors as deemed necessary.
The Stevenson Educational Center will also set up group study sessions for certain courses. The meeting times and dates will be posted so that all student-athletes enrolled in those courses have the opportunity to attend the sessions.
Student-athletes may also request tutors for individual tutoring sessions. Requests for tutors are made to the Stevenson Educational Center. The Tutor Coordinator will then assign a tutor based on the request.
All student-athletes are to meet with tutors at the Stevenson Educational Center. The Stevenson Educational Center provides tutoring without charge to student-athletes to assist them with their academic programs. It is important to note that the purpose of tutoring is to help to clarify and reinforce assignments and course material. Tutoring supplements studying. It does not remove the responsibility from you to do your own work.
Books - All scholarship book requests are handled through the Stevenson Educational Center. Renee Briggs will coordinate book distribution and return. All books are to be returned after you have completed final exams. If you should need to keep a book for a course or wish to purchase a book, please contact Renee.
Study Table - We ask that you observe and respect the rules during your use of the areas so we may create a positive study environment. Mandatory evening and/or daytime study table is implemented on a sport-by-sport basis. Coaches may require attendance on both a team and individual basis. Your coach and academic coordinator will determine the location, days, and times for your specific sport. If you are required to put in your time at the Stevenson Educational Center, you must bring your student ID with you in order to receive credit for the time you spend there. We utilize the SAMS program to monitor your time spent at the Stevenson Educational Center. A report will be generated at 2 p.m. every Friday afternoon and delivered to your coach. The facility is open Sunday through Friday. The hours are 12 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Sunday, 8:30 a.m. - 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Friday.
Student Tips - Here are a few tips from current and past student athletes.
"The key I would say is staying on top of your work don't put off to tomorrow what you can do today. Also forming a relationship with your teacher at the beginning of the semester is important. Although teachers don't just give grades if they know who you are they will usually give you the benefit of the doubt in a positive way."
Adam Harris - Football
"Take advantage of all the services offered to student-athletes, including tutors and study tables. And don't get ever get behind in your work because it's hard to catch up."
Jacquie Greco - Ice Hockey
"My advice would be to use the resources that are given to you. Since the school provides free tutoring sessions for pretty much any class it would be stupid if you didn't get a tutor for a class you are or may struggle in."
LJ Papaleo - Soccer
"Keep everything as simple as possible; trying to do too much makes it difficult to focus on the important things that need to be done."
Jeff Scull - 2009 NCAA 88 Elite Award Winner Cross Country
"Make sure to make friends in your classes. It's much easier to study in a group and talk through problems than to do everything by yourself."
Mark Vyzas - Rowing
"Don't get overwhelmed by all the work but keep up with recommended reading and problems, work hard to do what you can but don't stress too much, get a good amount of sleep and go to class and your grades will take care of themselves."
Amanda Hamilton - Soccer
"It sounds really geeky, but plan every single second of your day."
Meryl Engler - Rowing
"My favorite quote is: 'The way to perfection has no speed limit'."
Kuba Kotynia - Swimming
