TEAM NOTES
Syracuse improves to 4-1 overall with its victory today. The Orange is 4-1 for the first time since the 1999 season when it began the year 5-1.
Today’s win also marked the first time since 2007 that SU won its BIGEAST opener. The Orange is 11-8 in conference-opening games, including a 4-2 record on the road.
The victory is Syracuse’s first against USF.
SU is 9-3 all-time on October 9.
The Orange defense recorded two inceptions for the second consecutive game.
The Syracuse defense also registered a season-high tying four sacks. SU now as 12 sacks in its first five games.
The Orange offense rushed for 178 yards, giving them 427 yards rushing in the last two contests.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
Senior nose tackle Bud Tribbey joined 2010 team captains Ryan Bartholomew, Derrell Smith and Rob Long for the game today.
Senior cornerback Da’Mon Merkerson recorded his second career interception, picking off B.J. Daniels in the end zone on USF’s first possession. Merkerson’s first career interception came in SU’s last game against Colgate.
Senior safety Max Suter registered his first sack of the season on USF’s second possession.
Junior running back Antwon Bailey matched his career long with a 30-yard reception on SU’s first drive of the second quarter.
Senior cornerback Mike Holmes tallied his second career sack during the second quarter. Holmes’ other sack came at Akron earlier this season.
Senior running back Delone Carter is now ninth on SU’s all-time rushing list with 2,395 yards. He passed the great Ernie Davis (1959-61) who rushed for 2,386 yards during his storied Syracuse career. Carter finished the game with 105 yards on 26 carriers.
It was Carter’s eighth 100-yard game, tying him for eighth with Bill Hurley (1975-79) on SU’s career list.
Freshman kicker Ross Krautman went 2-for-2, making a 31-yard field goal in the second quarter and a 41-yard try in the third quarter. Krautman is now 6-of-7 on the season.
Redshirt senior defensive tackle Anthony Perkins blocked a USF extra point in the third quarter. It was his first career blocked kick. It also marked the first time SU has blocked a PAT since 2007 (Brandon Gilbeaux vs. Connecticut).
Freshman defensive back Jeremi Wilkes recorded his first career interception in the third quarter.
Junior wide receiver Marcus Sales tallied his first reception of the season, a three-yard touchdown catch to give the Orange a 13-9 lead with 7:15 remaining.
Sophomore safety Shamarko Thomas registered his first sack of the season in the fourth quarter.
