Head Coach Gary Gait Postgame Quotes
Syracuse vs. Dartmouth
March 24, 2010
Coyne Field, Syracuse, N.Y.
On what went wrong in the game:
“I just think it was everything from effort level to focus – just the mental side of the game. We didn’t respond to the challenge. They pressured and instead of having composure and responding with energy and hustle and fighting back, we were beaten down a little bit. It was a tough game. When one of your top defenders is gone, it’s tough but that’s what being a team is all about, how you respond. And today it wasn’t very good.”
On what the team did to respond to being behind by such a large deficit:
“We tried timeouts, we tried regrouping them, we tried different players. You just get to a point where, if you’re not in it and focused mentally, there’s not much you can do. So, Dartmouth outplayed us, out-hustled us and they definitely deserved that win.”
On if the yellow cards impacted the game:
“The yellow cards came at the end of the game for the most part. The yellow cards didn’t really have that much to do with the outcome. It was just being a step behind all day that caused a lot of the problems.”
On the team’s sloppy play:
“If I had the answers for that, I would’ve told them what they need to do. They just looked sloppy, they looked lethargic and they just kept making mistakes. There wasn’t anyone in particular that was able to step up and lead on the field. So we’ll just have to go back and look at the game film and review our preparation. There’s a lot of difference between the games we’ve played well and the games we didn’t. So we’ll have to do some more mental work and prepare.”
