Student-Athlete Quotes
Scoop Jardine, Junior, Guard
Can you comment on how you guys have played against BIG EAST opponents.
“We are going to continue to play. That was unacceptable, that loss right there. There’s no way we’re supposed to lose like that. That was unacceptable to the fans, everybody that was watching us, everybody that was supporting us. That’s not the way to go out at all after coming off a loss. We’ve got to get back to playing Syracuse basketball.”
Do you think that the team will be able to bounce back with the next three games being on the road?
“It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter where we play at. We have to get back playing the way that got us eighteen wins, I don’t care who we are playing. We’re not playing like that. We have to find it fast.”
Do you think the team can get back to playing the way they were earlier in the season?
“We have to get back to trusting each other, not only on the offensive end, but the defensive end too. We have to trust what our coaches tell us. Don’t get me wrong, Seton Hall made some crazy shots tonight. Hazell made some threes and I don’t think our defense could have gotten any better, but we stopped believing in the zone which got us to this point. We have to do a better job believing that no matter what shot they make we have to continue to play offense and continue to score.”
Brandon Triche, Sophomore, Guard
What exactly happened tonight?
“The same thing that has happened the last three games. They had a game plan and they followed it. We had a game plan and we didn’t follow it. The last three games we have been losing focus. Our defense is playing badly. I have to play better as a sophomore. I have to take on a little bit more. Not even offensively, I have to try to get in there and get rebounds, keep guys in front and get after shooters. Today our game plan, we knew Hazell was going to shoot four feet behind the three point line and we have to get out there. He hit about four threes from four feet behind the arc. With him hitting those shots, Jordan Theodore was starting to hit them and as a whole they just started hitting threes. When a team does that it is so hard to beat them.”
Were there any indications earlier this week that the game would go this way?
“No, I just think that our leaders have to step up a little bit. Being a sophomore, a guard, and a starter, they expect a little bit more. You have to account for your mistakes. I think we have to just come together as a team, that’s the biggest thing. We lost the first game. You should never lose two games in a row. To lose three in a row after having no losses, we are not used to losing. To lose three in a row, it’s almost like losing to Le Moyne. It’s a bad feeling.”
What is your opinion on how the defense played today?
“I think when we played them at home they shot 1-17. All of this year, they have been bad, but they were just hitting shots. Now they started to hit shots and expose us. They started to hit shots and everything was spread out. When everything is spread, they go high post and then back door. They play outside-in, instead of inside-out. Teams are going to keep looking at that. People have seen the last three games that we have lost and they are going to try to hit shots and go inside. That’s what they are doing, sticking to a game plan and trying to figure out how to beat the zone. It’s not really them figuring it out, we just have to get better. We just have to eliminate our mistakes and get better.”
James Southerland, Sophomore, Forward
How does the team need to respond after these three losses?
“I think everyone loses confidence after this. It’s all about trying to come back and get our confidence back up.”
Do you think the team can rebound against Marquette?
“Definitely. We have a great bunch of guys who can get the job done. It’s all about staying under control. Motivation is a definite big key that will help us.”
Can you comment on the start of tonight’s game.
“I felt like I missed a couple of shots, some in and outs. I felt if I made those shots, it would have got me going.”
