March 24-26, 2011: Asics/Winthrop Invitational | Results
Senior Kelsey Rubeor took first place in the heptathlon event at the Asics/Winthrop Invitational on Friday with a personal best 5,337 points. She finished first in five out of seven events during Thursday and Friday's competition.
Rubeor took first in the shot put (12.65m), high jump (1.72m), 200-meter dash (25.81), long jump (5.80m) and javelin (42.97m). Her marks in all events except the shot put and high jump were personal bests. She also took second in the 800-meter event with a time of 2:32.86 and third in the 100-meter hurdles at 15.53 seconds.
In the first meet of the outdoor season, the Murrieta Valley, Calif. native qualified for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships in the high jump, long jump and javelin. She also qualified for ECAC competition in the heptathlon.
Rubeor has met the NCAA qualifying standards for the heptathlon during each of the last three seasons. The top-16 athletes in that event will advance to compete at the 2011 NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa in June.
Junior Ieva Staponkute and senior Sham Lewis also joined Rubeor in South Carolina. Staponkute took second place in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 5.75 meters. The Klaipeda, Lithuania native met the qualifying marks for both the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships. Lewis crossed the finish line in seventh place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.46 seconds.
March 25, 2011: Stanford Invitational | Results
Six members of the Syracuse University track and field team ran personal best times at the Stanford Invitational on March 25 and 26. Four distance runners ran their way to top-10 finishes and all 15 runners competing at Stanford slated BIG EAST qualifying times.
In the women’s 5,000-meter run, junior Lauren Penney and senior Katie Hursey set personal bests with times of 16:09.44 and 16:10.50, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively in section one. Sophomore Sarah Pagano also earned a sixth place finish in section three of the 5,000-meter run with a personal best time of 16:32.44.
Senior Rebekah MacKay (16:52.40) and junior Heather Stephens (17:09.43) competed in section two of the 5,000-meter run, placing 13th and 18th, respectively.
Senior Cassie White's time of 10:33.95 in the 3,000-meter run earned her an eighth place finish. In the 10,000-meter event, senior Catherine DeSarle registered a career best time of 33:38.94, which took 13th. Junior Natalie Busby finished crossed the finish line at 34:52.76 to earn a 33rd place finish.
On the men’s side, sophomore Joseph Bubniak recorded the highest finish in fifth with a time of 3:52.06 in the 1,500-meter run.
In section three of the 5,000-meter, sophomore Robert Molke ran a personal best time of 14:22.25, finishing in 11th place. Senior Corey Robinson competed in section two, placing 13th at 14:22.88.
The Orange had four runners in the 10,000-meter run. In section one, juniors Tito Medrano and Pat Dupont, took secured the 17th and 28th spots with time of 29:22.48 and 30;13.77, respectively.
Senior Jay Koloseus and sophomore Sean Keefe each set personal bests in the 10,000. Koloseus finished in 21st with a time of 29:58.37 and Keefe crossed the finish line in 25th at 30:06.94.
April 2, 2011: Princeton Sam Howell Invitational | Results
The Syracuse University track and field team competed at the Princeton Sam Howell Invitational on April 1 and 2. Two members of the Orange squad recorded BIG EAST qualifying times.
Junior Mark Melilli was SU's highest finisher, taking third place in the javelin with a BIG EAST qualifying mark of 57.15 meters. Senior Nicholas Damato finished just two spots behind Melilli in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 53.07 meters.
Senior Kwaku Boah met conference standards in the shot put with a throw of 15.12 meters, earning him a fifth-place finish. In the long jump, sophomore Will Watson placed sixth with a leap of 6.41 meters, while senior Evan Stivala's jump of 5.92 meters took 11th. Stivala also earned a seventh-place finish in the high jump at 1.79 meters.
Junior Gregory Manning-Smith ran his was to a fourth-place finish in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:09.51.
In her first meet of the outdoor track and field season, freshman Michelle Riley took seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.57.
April 9, 2011: ASU Sun Angel | Results
The Syracuse University track and field team competed at the Sun Angel Classic, hosted by Arizona State University, on April 8 and 9. Three members of the Orange squad finished first in their respective heats, while seven placed in the top-10 overall. Seven BIG EAST qualifying marks were recorded and three field athletes met ECAC and IC4A standards.
Junior Ieva Staponkute recorded SU's highest finish, taking second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.12 meters. She met BIG EAST and ECAC standards for the second time this season. Freshman SaDe Lewis took second in her heat and ninth overall in the 100-meter hurdles with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 14.65.
In the 200-meter dash, senior Lareea Chisholm won her heat and placed 15th overall with a time of 25.80. Freshman Amber Passalaqua took sixth in her heat and 18th overall with a time of 15.37. Chisholm also competed in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line at 12.71 to earn fourth in her heat and 12th overall. Freshman Ashley Keyes followed Chisholm across the finish line at 12.85, finishing eighth in the heat and 16th overall.
On the men's side, junior Mark Melilli placed eighth in the javelin with a throw of 61.20 meters. He bested his BIG EAST qualifying throw from the Sam Howell Invitational by more than four meters, qualifying for IC4A competition.
Sophomore Frank Taylor won his flight in the long jump and went on to place eighth overall with a personal-best, BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying leap of 7.11 meters. Taylor also recorded a personal-best and BIG EAST qualifying time of 15.07 in the 110-meter hurdles, placing third in his heat and 13th overall. Freshman Donald Pollitt crossed the finish line just ahead of Taylor at 14.97 to place second in the heat and ninth overall. Pollitt also won his heat in the 100-meter dash and took 10th overall with a time of 22.51.
In the 100-meter dash, senior Sham Lewis met BIG EAST qualifying standards with a time of 10.96, earning a fourth-place finish in his heat and sixth-place finish overall.
April 9, 2011: Cornell Spring Invite | Results
The Orange women highlighted SU's performance at the Cornell Spring Invitational on April 9. Syracuse secured the top-five spots in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with five BIG EAST qualifying times. Three of those times also met ECAC standards.
Senior Katie Hursey led all runners across the finish line at 10:27.15. She was followed by senior Cassie White (10:32. 03), junior Natalie Busby (10:34.99), sophomore Erin Cawley (11:03.59) and Carly Hamond (11:07.64) in the next four spots. All five recorded BIG EAST qualifying time, while Hursey, White and Busby each met ECAC qualifying standards.
SU's freshman four success at the meet as five women placed in the top-eight in their respective events. Michelle Riley earned a fourth-place finish in the 800m run with a personal-best and BIG EAST qualifying time of 2:13.41. Lauren Kersjes took third in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:42.22. Serenity Martin ran a personal-best time of 12.91 in the 100-meter dash to earn second place.
In the 3000-meter run, freshmen Alexandra Clinton (10:09.48) and Julie Jablonski (10:16.22) finished back-to-back in seventh and eighth place, respectively.
On the men's side, junior Brady Becker was SU's only first-place finisher, recording a time of 15:28.80 in the 5,000 meter run. Junior Evan Stivala placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 1.84 meters. Sophomore Tyler McCully crossed the finish line in eighth place with a time of 50.66 in the 400 meter dash.
The men's 1,500 run featured a sea of eight Orange competitors and four SU harriers finished in the top-10 of the event. Freshman Justin Murray led the SU pack across the finish line in fifth place with a time of 3:57.71. Junior Gregory Manning-Smith followed on Murray's heals in sixth place at 4:01.12. Senior Nat Saviet took eighth with a time of 4:02.05 and junior Patrick Geoghegan rounded out the top-10 with a time of 4:02.52.
April 15-16, 2011: Auburn War Eagle Invite | Results
Seven men and seven women represented the Orange at the Auburn War Eagle Invitational. Among those in action this weekend, 12 athletes met BIG EAST qualifying standards, including four student-athletes who met the conference championship criteria for the first time this season.
The men’s 110-meter hurdles highlighted Syracuse’s performance at Auburn. Freshman Donald Pollitt and junior Matthew Callanan finish sixth and seventh with times of 14.51 and 14.56, respectively, which are both personal-bests and meet BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying standards.
In the field, sophomore Frank Taylor finished eighth in the long jump with a BIG EAST qualifying leap of 6.97 meters.
The men’s 4x100 meter relay team consisting of Sham Lewis, Darryl White, Victor Nwosu and Pollitt, took 13th with a time of 42.79. That time jumps the relay squad into sixth overall in the BIG EAST.
Lewis and White also competed in the 100-meter dash, taking 19th and 24th, respectively, with BIG EAST qualifying times of 10.80 and 10.90. Lewis’s time also met IC4A standards. Pollitt qualified or conference championship competition, taking 28th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.98.
Senior Jay Koloseus was SU’s lone distance runner that made the trip to Auburn. Koloseus took 10th in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:00.76.
SU’s women had three runners qualify for the BIG EAST Championships in the 100-meter dash. Seniors Flings Owusu-Agyapong (11.97) and Lareea Chisholm (12.23) and freshman Ashley Keyes (12.23) finished in 17th, 29th and 33rd, respectively. Owusu-Agyapong also met ECAC standards in the 100m. She met conference and ECAC standards in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.59 as she was the first of six SU sprinters to cross the finish line out of 81 total participants in the event.
Freshman SaDe Lewis took 18th in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.44, meeting BIG EAST standards for the second time. She also finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles Olympic development race with a time of 14.43.
In the field, junior Ieva Staponkute finished in fifth place in the triple jump with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying mark of 12.33 meters. Senior Kelsey Rubeor met conference standards with personal-best marks in the long jump and shot put. She took 11th in the long jump with a leap of 5.85 meters, which also met ECAC standards. Rubeor placed 15th in the shot put with a career-best heave of 13.23 meters. Freshman Amber Passalaqua finished 21st in the long time with a BIG EAST qualifying jump of 5.60 meters.
April 16, 2011: Kent Taylor- Joe Hilton Carolina Invitational | Results
All four off the runners who competed at the Kent Taylor-Joe Hilton UNC Invitational found success with BIG EAST qualifying times.
Three of the four harriers had already met conference standards, but sophomore Andrew Nelson was SU’s newest qualifier in the 1,500 meter run. Nelson took 27th with a time of 3:53.85. Fellow sophomore Joseph Bubniak ran his was to a 20th-place finish with a personal-best, BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying time of 3:50.77.
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, sophomore Robert Molke finished third with a BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying time of 9:13.67. Molke’s time currently ranks 10th overall in the conference.
Representing SU’s women’s squad was junior Lauren Penney, who met conference and ECAC standards in the 1,500 meter run with a third place finish at 4:27.49.
April 22-23, 2011: Princeton Larry Ellis | Results
At the Larry Ellis Invitational, the Orange women's 3,000-meter steeplechase participants stole the show with four runners finishing in the top-six. Senior Katie Hursey bested her personal-best by nearly 14 seconds to take the 3,000-meter steeplechase title with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying time of 10:13.39, which currently tops the conference and ranks eighth in the nation.
Juniors Natalie Busby and Heather Stephens followed Hursey across the finish line in third and fourth place, recording BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying times of 10:16.30 and 10:18.90, respectively. Senior Cassie White finished sixth with a conference and ECAC qualifying mark of 10:24.05. In section two of the steeplechase, sophomore Erin Cawley earned a fourth-place finish with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 10:58.07.
Junior Lauren Penney took third in the 1,500-meter run with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying time of 4:21.91. Freshman Michelle Riley finished 10th in section three of the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.87, meeting BIG EAST standards.
Senior Catherine DeSarle placed fourth in the 5,000-meter run with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying time of 16:25.31. Sophomore Sarah Pagano followed suit, reaching her qualifying times and trailed DeSarle in seventh place at 16:36.62. Junior Carly Hamond, who had previously met BIG EAST standards in the steeplechase, met BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying standards in the 5,000 with a time of 16:58.48.
SU also found success with its young runners in the 5,000. Freshmen Lauren Kersjes and Julie Jablonski each met BIG EAST and ECAC standards for the first time this season with times of 16:54.16 and 17:00.22, respectively. Fellow rookie Alexandra Clinton also qualified for BIG EAST competition with a time of 17:31.73 in section two of the event.
The men's team also found success in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Junior Pat Dupont set a new personal-best by nearly 14 seconds and crossed the finish line fourth at 8:54.29, qualifying him for BIG EAST and IC4A competition. His time ranks third in the conference and 22nd in the nation. Sophomore Robert Molke took 14th with a personal-best, BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying mark of 9:07.01.
Sophomore Joseph Bubniak took sixth in section three of the 1,500-meter run with a BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying time of 3:50.74. It marked the first time Bubniak met IC4A standards this season. Sophomore Andrew Nelson finished fifth in section five of the 1,500 with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 3:54.65.
Junior Tito Medrano crossed the finish line 14th in the 5,000-meter run with a BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying mark of 14:12.79. Senior Steve Weeks met BIG EAST and IC4A standards for the first time this season placing 25th in the 5,000 with a time of 14:28.11.
April 23, 2011: Cornell Upstate | Results
At the Cornell Upstate Challenge, junior Ieva Staponkute took first and set a new facility record at Cornell, breaking the old record by .26 meters, in the triple jump with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying mark of 12.81 meters.
Flings Owusu-Agyapong took the 100-meter dash title with a time of 11.63, which ranks second in the conference, and finished second in the 200-meter dash at 24.64. She met BIG EAST and ECAC standards in both races.
The men and women's 4x100 meter relay teams each took second. The men's team, comprised of senior Sham Lewis, junior Darryl White, senior Victor Nwosu and freshman Donald Pollitt, crossed the finish line at 41.21 to qualify for IC4A competition.
White and Lewis also took seventh and eighth in the 100-meter dash with BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying times of 10.72 and 10.74, respectively. It marked the first time this season White met IC4A standards. He also met BIG EAST standards in the 200-meter dash for the first time with a mark of 22.06 seconds.
Representing the women's 4x100 squad was seniors Lareea Chisholm and Owusu-Agyapong and freshmen Ashley Keyes and SaDe Lewis, who finished in 47.06 seconds, meeting ECAC standards. Chisholm also finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 12.05, earning an ECAC qualifying time for the first time this season.
Lewis also took third in the finals of the 100-meter hurdles with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 14.42. In the men's 110-meter hurdles, junior Matt Callanan (14.49), Pollitt (14.56) and sophomore Franklin Taylor (14.66) took third, fourth and sixth, respectively.
In the field, Taylor also met BIG EAST and IC4A standards in the long jump with a jump of 7.25 meters, good for a third-place finish. Nwosu finished fifth, meeting conference standards for the first time this season with a leap of 7.18 meters.
Senior Kawku Boah finished second in the shot put with a BIG EAST qualifying mark of 15.13 meters. Senior Kelsey Rubeor took second in the long jump with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying leap of 5.80 meters.
May 1, 2011: Cornell Big Red
Senior Kwaku Boah and freshman Justin Murray each took first in their respective events at the Cornell Big Red Invitational on Sunday, May 1. Boah took the crown in the weight throw with a BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying heave of 53.73 meter, while Murray's time of 3:58.11 earned him first place in the 1,500 meter run.
Boah's mark in the weight throw topped his previous personal-best by 2.37 meters. Boah also finished third in the shot put with a throw of 14.52 meters. Junior Gregory Manning-Smith also competed in the 1,500 meter run, placing sixth with a time of 4:01.21.
Sophomore Tyler McCully ran a personal-best time of 22.55 seconds in the 200 meter dash, placing 12th overall. In the field, senior Evan Stivala took fourth in the high jump with a leap of 1.89 meters. Senior Nick Damato placed sixth in the javelin throw with a mark of 45.12 meters.
May 6, 2011: BIG EAST Championship- Day One | Men's Results | Women's Results
Senior Kelsey Rubeor leads the women's heptathlon with 3,328 points through four events on the first day of competition at the 2011 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Rubeor won the shot put with a throw of 13.82 meters, which was 1.66 meters more than the second-place finisher. She also finished third in the high jump and the 200-meter dash.
The Murrieta Valley, Calif. native entered the meet ranked second in the conference and looks to become the fifth consecutive Syracuse student-athlete to take the heptathlon title. The remaining three events will be contested tomorrow morning at Jumbo Elliott Track at Villanova Stadium.
Senior Kawku Boah finished eighth in the men's hammer throw with a heave of 53.74 meters.
May 7, 2011: BIG EAST Championship- Day Two | Men's Results | Women's Results
Senior Kelsey Rubeor and junior Tito Medrano were each crowned BIG EAST Champions in their respective events today at the 2011 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Villanova. Rubeor held onto her lead from day one to capture the heptathlon title, while Medrano defended his title in the 10,000-meter run.
The Orange women have now won five consecutive conference heptathlon championships. Rubeor won two out of the three remaining events today, including the javelin and the long jump. Throughout the past two days, she took first in three of the seven heptathlon events. Her 5,680 points are the second highest in BIG EAST history.
Rubeor also took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 5.98 meters. Medrano, the 2010 BIG EAST champion in the 10,000m run, led all runners across the finish line at 29:34.06 to take first for the second consecutive year.
The women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase contingent continued its success, securing spots two through four. Senior Katie Hursey led the Orange trio in second with a time of 10:18.12. Junior Heather Stephens and senior Cassie White followed in third and fourth place, respectively.
Senior Flings Owusu-Agyapong took third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.62 to advance to tomorrow’s finals.
In the women’s 10,000-meter run, sophomore Sarah Pagano and senior Catherine DeSarle placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
On the men’s side, junior Pat Dupont took third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:02.05. Junior Darryl White finished sixth in the preliminary round of the 100-meter dash to advance to tomorrow’s finals.
Also advancing to the finals in the 110-meter hurdles were freshman Donald Pollitt and sophomore Matthew Callanan. The duo took fourth and fifth, respectively in the preliminary round today.
Junior Mark Melilli finished third overall in the javelin with a throw of 62.44 meters. In the long jump, sophomore Frank Taylor and senior Victor Nwosu secured spots six and seven, respectively.
After two days of competition, the Orange women are tied for second place, while the men are sitting in fourth. The women are tied with South Florida with 44 points, just six points behind Louisville, who leads the pack.
With the men and women’s 5,000-meter run and the women’s triple jump yet to be contested, the Orange is looking for more success on the final day. Competition will resume tomorrow, May 8, at 10 a.m.
Junior Ieva Staponkute tops the conference in the triple jump heading into Sunday’s action. The women’s 5,000-meter run will feature Lauren Penney and Hursey, who rank third and fourth in the conference, respectively. Medrano will also compete in the men’s 5,000m, along with Corey Robinson and Steve Weeks. The three each rank among with top-15 runners in the event.
May 8, 2011: BIG EAST Championship- Day Three | Men's Results | Women's Results
Junior Ieva Staponkute highlighted the final day of competition today at the 2011 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships, capturing the women’s triple jump crown. After three days of action at Villanova University, the Orange women finished seventh overall, while the men took ninth in the conference.
Staponkute was ranked first in the BIG EAST coming into the championships and held onto the top spot with a jump of 12.81 meters.
In the finals of the 100-meter dash, senior Flings Owusu-Agyapong took third with a time of 11.55. Owusu-Agyapong also ran the second leg of the 4x100 meter relay, which took sixth overall with a time of 46.73. She was joined by senior Lareea Chisholm and freshmen Ashley Keyes and SaDe Lewis.
After winning the heptathlon title yesterday, senior Kelsey Rubeor placed eighth in the high jump with a leap of 1.70 meters. Junior Lauren Penney crossed the finish line fourth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:21.45. Junior Heather Stephens and senior Katie Hursey finished 10th and 11th, respectively.
On the men’s side, freshman Donald Pollitt placed third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.20. Sophomore Matthew Callanan followed closely behind Pollitt in fifth at 14.38.
The 10,000-meter champion, junior Tito Medrano, took fifth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:21.93. Senior Corey Robinson and senior Steve Weeks finished sixth and eighth, respectively.
In the finals of the 100-meter dash, junior Darryl White finished sixth with a time of 10.68. He also ran the second leg of the 4x100 meter relay, which finished sixth, crossing the finish line at 41.70. The relay ream also featured seniors Sham Lewis and Victor Nwosu and Pollitt.
May 13-15, 2011: ECAC Track & Field Championships | Results
Flings Owusu-Agyapong, Ieva Staponkute and Natalie Busby each won individual titles in their respective events at the ECAC Track & Field Championships, hosted by Princeton from May 13-15. The Orange women took seventh overall as a team in a field, which included 52 other participating institutions.
Owusu-Agyapong took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.79. Staponkute recorded a personal best mark in the triple jump to take the crown with a leap of 12.85 meters. Busby led all runners in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:16.74. Busby currently ranks ninth in the East Region, while Staponkute is 12th.
Freshman SaDe Lewis finished seventh in her heat and 14th overall in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.26.
May 13-15, 2011: IC4A Championships | Results
Nine student-athletes competed for the Orange. Senior Victor Nwosu took second in his heat and 10th overall in the long jump with a leap of 6.98 meters.
In the 110-meter hurdles, junior Matthew Callanan placed third in his heat and 10th overall with a time of 14.60. Freshman Donald Pollitt finished sixth in his heat and 14th overall with a time of 14.70. Sophomore Frank Taylor's time of 14.87 earned him second place in his heat and 21st overall. Taylor also competed in the long jump, placing sixth in his heat and 14th overall with a leap of 6.91 meters.
Sophomore Robert Molke finished sixth in his heat and 14th overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:08.59.
In the 100-meter dash, junior Darryl White crossed the finish line sixth in his heat with a time of 10.91, while senior Sham Lewis took second in his heat at 10.94. White and Lewis took 18th and 21st overall, respectively.
Junior Steve Weeks ran a time of 14:37.30 in the 5,000-meter event to finish 17th in his heat and 28th overall.
Wrapping up competition in the field for SU was junior Mark Melilli in the javelin. After earning All-BIG EAST honors last weekend, Melilli placed ninth in his heat and 19th overall with a throw of 54.04 meters.
May 26-28, 2011: NCAA East Preliminary Round | Results
Four members of the Syracuse University track and field team ranked among the top athletes in the country this weekend at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds. Junior Tito Medrano, and seniors Flings Owusu-Agyapong, Katie Hursey and Kelsey Rubeor have each advanced to the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa from June 8-11.
After winning back-to-back BIG EAST Championships in the 10,000 meter run, Medrano continued his run of success in the post season. He placed fifth overall with a personal-besttime of 29:10.01 to earn a spot at nationals.
Hursey finished second in heat two of the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best time of 10:08.44. On the sprints side, Owusu-Agyapongrepresented the Orange well in the 100 meter dash, placing third in heat five of the prelims.Her personal-best time of 11.60 advancedher to the semifinals. In the semifinals,her time of 11.67 was enough to secure a spot at nationals.
Rubeor had previously secured a slot at nationals in the heptathlon. She competed in the javelin at the NCAA Preliminary’s finishing 16th in flight three with a throw of 40.72 meters.
Three other runners joined Hursey in the steeplechase. Senior Cassie White (10:33.42) and junior Natalie Busby (10:38.59) took seventh and ninth, respectively, in heat one. Junior Heather Stephens placed sixth in heat three with a time of 10:19.97.
In the 5,000-meter run, junior Lauren Penney took 14th in heat two with a time of 16:52.03. Three members of the Orange competed in the 10,000-meter run. Sophomore Sarah Pagano led all SU runners across the finish line in 23rd with a time of 34:20.73. Senior Catherine DeSarle (34:45.04) and freshman Lauren Kersjes (35:36.35) followed in the 33rd and 43rdspots, respectively.
In the field for the women, the BIG EAST and ECAC triple jump champion, junior Ieva Staponkute placed eighth in flight three with a leap of 12.29 meters.
All-BIG EAST 110-meter hurdler, freshman Donald Pollitt, placed sixth in heat five of the prelims with a time of 14.38 to advance to the semifinals where he took eighth with a time of 14.55. Junior Matt Callanan finished seventh in heat three with a time of 14.71. In the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, junior Pat Dupont took seventh with a time of 9:01.88.
June 8-11, 2011: NCAA Outdoor Championships | Results
Katie Hursey became Syracuse’s fourth student-athlete to earn U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America status this week at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Drake University. She recorded a 14th-place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase to garner second-team All-America honors.
Hursey advanced to the finals after finishing sixth in her heat in the semifinals on Friday. She crossed the finish line in the finals in a time of 10:43.28. She joined junior Tito Medrano on the second team, while seniors Kelsey Rubeor (heptathlon) and Flings Owusu-Agyapong (100m dash) received honorable mention All-America honors.
Senior Kelsey Rubeor took first place in the heptathlon event at the Asics/Winthrop Invitational on Friday with a personal best 5,337 points. She finished first in five out of seven events during Thursday and Friday's competition.
Rubeor took first in the shot put (12.65m), high jump (1.72m), 200-meter dash (25.81), long jump (5.80m) and javelin (42.97m). Her marks in all events except the shot put and high jump were personal bests. She also took second in the 800-meter event with a time of 2:32.86 and third in the 100-meter hurdles at 15.53 seconds.
In the first meet of the outdoor season, the Murrieta Valley, Calif. native qualified for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships in the high jump, long jump and javelin. She also qualified for ECAC competition in the heptathlon.
Rubeor has met the NCAA qualifying standards for the heptathlon during each of the last three seasons. The top-16 athletes in that event will advance to compete at the 2011 NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa in June.
Junior Ieva Staponkute and senior Sham Lewis also joined Rubeor in South Carolina. Staponkute took second place in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 5.75 meters. The Klaipeda, Lithuania native met the qualifying marks for both the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships. Lewis crossed the finish line in seventh place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.46 seconds.
March 25, 2011: Stanford Invitational | Results
Six members of the Syracuse University track and field team ran personal best times at the Stanford Invitational on March 25 and 26. Four distance runners ran their way to top-10 finishes and all 15 runners competing at Stanford slated BIG EAST qualifying times.
In the women’s 5,000-meter run, junior Lauren Penney and senior Katie Hursey set personal bests with times of 16:09.44 and 16:10.50, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively in section one. Sophomore Sarah Pagano also earned a sixth place finish in section three of the 5,000-meter run with a personal best time of 16:32.44.
Senior Rebekah MacKay (16:52.40) and junior Heather Stephens (17:09.43) competed in section two of the 5,000-meter run, placing 13th and 18th, respectively.
Senior Cassie White's time of 10:33.95 in the 3,000-meter run earned her an eighth place finish. In the 10,000-meter event, senior Catherine DeSarle registered a career best time of 33:38.94, which took 13th. Junior Natalie Busby finished crossed the finish line at 34:52.76 to earn a 33rd place finish.
On the men’s side, sophomore Joseph Bubniak recorded the highest finish in fifth with a time of 3:52.06 in the 1,500-meter run.
In section three of the 5,000-meter, sophomore Robert Molke ran a personal best time of 14:22.25, finishing in 11th place. Senior Corey Robinson competed in section two, placing 13th at 14:22.88.
The Orange had four runners in the 10,000-meter run. In section one, juniors Tito Medrano and Pat Dupont, took secured the 17th and 28th spots with time of 29:22.48 and 30;13.77, respectively.
Senior Jay Koloseus and sophomore Sean Keefe each set personal bests in the 10,000. Koloseus finished in 21st with a time of 29:58.37 and Keefe crossed the finish line in 25th at 30:06.94.
April 2, 2011: Princeton Sam Howell Invitational | Results
The Syracuse University track and field team competed at the Princeton Sam Howell Invitational on April 1 and 2. Two members of the Orange squad recorded BIG EAST qualifying times.
Junior Mark Melilli was SU's highest finisher, taking third place in the javelin with a BIG EAST qualifying mark of 57.15 meters. Senior Nicholas Damato finished just two spots behind Melilli in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 53.07 meters.
Senior Kwaku Boah met conference standards in the shot put with a throw of 15.12 meters, earning him a fifth-place finish. In the long jump, sophomore Will Watson placed sixth with a leap of 6.41 meters, while senior Evan Stivala's jump of 5.92 meters took 11th. Stivala also earned a seventh-place finish in the high jump at 1.79 meters.
Junior Gregory Manning-Smith ran his was to a fourth-place finish in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:09.51.
In her first meet of the outdoor track and field season, freshman Michelle Riley took seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.57.
April 9, 2011: ASU Sun Angel | Results
The Syracuse University track and field team competed at the Sun Angel Classic, hosted by Arizona State University, on April 8 and 9. Three members of the Orange squad finished first in their respective heats, while seven placed in the top-10 overall. Seven BIG EAST qualifying marks were recorded and three field athletes met ECAC and IC4A standards.
Junior Ieva Staponkute recorded SU's highest finish, taking second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.12 meters. She met BIG EAST and ECAC standards for the second time this season. Freshman SaDe Lewis took second in her heat and ninth overall in the 100-meter hurdles with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 14.65.
In the 200-meter dash, senior Lareea Chisholm won her heat and placed 15th overall with a time of 25.80. Freshman Amber Passalaqua took sixth in her heat and 18th overall with a time of 15.37. Chisholm also competed in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line at 12.71 to earn fourth in her heat and 12th overall. Freshman Ashley Keyes followed Chisholm across the finish line at 12.85, finishing eighth in the heat and 16th overall.
On the men's side, junior Mark Melilli placed eighth in the javelin with a throw of 61.20 meters. He bested his BIG EAST qualifying throw from the Sam Howell Invitational by more than four meters, qualifying for IC4A competition.
Sophomore Frank Taylor won his flight in the long jump and went on to place eighth overall with a personal-best, BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying leap of 7.11 meters. Taylor also recorded a personal-best and BIG EAST qualifying time of 15.07 in the 110-meter hurdles, placing third in his heat and 13th overall. Freshman Donald Pollitt crossed the finish line just ahead of Taylor at 14.97 to place second in the heat and ninth overall. Pollitt also won his heat in the 100-meter dash and took 10th overall with a time of 22.51.
In the 100-meter dash, senior Sham Lewis met BIG EAST qualifying standards with a time of 10.96, earning a fourth-place finish in his heat and sixth-place finish overall.
April 9, 2011: Cornell Spring Invite | Results
The Orange women highlighted SU's performance at the Cornell Spring Invitational on April 9. Syracuse secured the top-five spots in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with five BIG EAST qualifying times. Three of those times also met ECAC standards.
Senior Katie Hursey led all runners across the finish line at 10:27.15. She was followed by senior Cassie White (10:32. 03), junior Natalie Busby (10:34.99), sophomore Erin Cawley (11:03.59) and Carly Hamond (11:07.64) in the next four spots. All five recorded BIG EAST qualifying time, while Hursey, White and Busby each met ECAC qualifying standards.
SU's freshman four success at the meet as five women placed in the top-eight in their respective events. Michelle Riley earned a fourth-place finish in the 800m run with a personal-best and BIG EAST qualifying time of 2:13.41. Lauren Kersjes took third in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:42.22. Serenity Martin ran a personal-best time of 12.91 in the 100-meter dash to earn second place.
In the 3000-meter run, freshmen Alexandra Clinton (10:09.48) and Julie Jablonski (10:16.22) finished back-to-back in seventh and eighth place, respectively.
On the men's side, junior Brady Becker was SU's only first-place finisher, recording a time of 15:28.80 in the 5,000 meter run. Junior Evan Stivala placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 1.84 meters. Sophomore Tyler McCully crossed the finish line in eighth place with a time of 50.66 in the 400 meter dash.
The men's 1,500 run featured a sea of eight Orange competitors and four SU harriers finished in the top-10 of the event. Freshman Justin Murray led the SU pack across the finish line in fifth place with a time of 3:57.71. Junior Gregory Manning-Smith followed on Murray's heals in sixth place at 4:01.12. Senior Nat Saviet took eighth with a time of 4:02.05 and junior Patrick Geoghegan rounded out the top-10 with a time of 4:02.52.
April 15-16, 2011: Auburn War Eagle Invite | Results
Seven men and seven women represented the Orange at the Auburn War Eagle Invitational. Among those in action this weekend, 12 athletes met BIG EAST qualifying standards, including four student-athletes who met the conference championship criteria for the first time this season.
The men’s 110-meter hurdles highlighted Syracuse’s performance at Auburn. Freshman Donald Pollitt and junior Matthew Callanan finish sixth and seventh with times of 14.51 and 14.56, respectively, which are both personal-bests and meet BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying standards.
In the field, sophomore Frank Taylor finished eighth in the long jump with a BIG EAST qualifying leap of 6.97 meters.
The men’s 4x100 meter relay team consisting of Sham Lewis, Darryl White, Victor Nwosu and Pollitt, took 13th with a time of 42.79. That time jumps the relay squad into sixth overall in the BIG EAST.
Lewis and White also competed in the 100-meter dash, taking 19th and 24th, respectively, with BIG EAST qualifying times of 10.80 and 10.90. Lewis’s time also met IC4A standards. Pollitt qualified or conference championship competition, taking 28th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.98.
Senior Jay Koloseus was SU’s lone distance runner that made the trip to Auburn. Koloseus took 10th in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:00.76.
SU’s women had three runners qualify for the BIG EAST Championships in the 100-meter dash. Seniors Flings Owusu-Agyapong (11.97) and Lareea Chisholm (12.23) and freshman Ashley Keyes (12.23) finished in 17th, 29th and 33rd, respectively. Owusu-Agyapong also met ECAC standards in the 100m. She met conference and ECAC standards in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.59 as she was the first of six SU sprinters to cross the finish line out of 81 total participants in the event.
Freshman SaDe Lewis took 18th in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.44, meeting BIG EAST standards for the second time. She also finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles Olympic development race with a time of 14.43.
In the field, junior Ieva Staponkute finished in fifth place in the triple jump with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying mark of 12.33 meters. Senior Kelsey Rubeor met conference standards with personal-best marks in the long jump and shot put. She took 11th in the long jump with a leap of 5.85 meters, which also met ECAC standards. Rubeor placed 15th in the shot put with a career-best heave of 13.23 meters. Freshman Amber Passalaqua finished 21st in the long time with a BIG EAST qualifying jump of 5.60 meters.
April 16, 2011: Kent Taylor- Joe Hilton Carolina Invitational | Results
All four off the runners who competed at the Kent Taylor-Joe Hilton UNC Invitational found success with BIG EAST qualifying times.
Three of the four harriers had already met conference standards, but sophomore Andrew Nelson was SU’s newest qualifier in the 1,500 meter run. Nelson took 27th with a time of 3:53.85. Fellow sophomore Joseph Bubniak ran his was to a 20th-place finish with a personal-best, BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying time of 3:50.77.
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, sophomore Robert Molke finished third with a BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying time of 9:13.67. Molke’s time currently ranks 10th overall in the conference.
Representing SU’s women’s squad was junior Lauren Penney, who met conference and ECAC standards in the 1,500 meter run with a third place finish at 4:27.49.
April 22-23, 2011: Princeton Larry Ellis | Results
At the Larry Ellis Invitational, the Orange women's 3,000-meter steeplechase participants stole the show with four runners finishing in the top-six. Senior Katie Hursey bested her personal-best by nearly 14 seconds to take the 3,000-meter steeplechase title with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying time of 10:13.39, which currently tops the conference and ranks eighth in the nation.
Juniors Natalie Busby and Heather Stephens followed Hursey across the finish line in third and fourth place, recording BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying times of 10:16.30 and 10:18.90, respectively. Senior Cassie White finished sixth with a conference and ECAC qualifying mark of 10:24.05. In section two of the steeplechase, sophomore Erin Cawley earned a fourth-place finish with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 10:58.07.
Junior Lauren Penney took third in the 1,500-meter run with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying time of 4:21.91. Freshman Michelle Riley finished 10th in section three of the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.87, meeting BIG EAST standards.
Senior Catherine DeSarle placed fourth in the 5,000-meter run with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying time of 16:25.31. Sophomore Sarah Pagano followed suit, reaching her qualifying times and trailed DeSarle in seventh place at 16:36.62. Junior Carly Hamond, who had previously met BIG EAST standards in the steeplechase, met BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying standards in the 5,000 with a time of 16:58.48.
SU also found success with its young runners in the 5,000. Freshmen Lauren Kersjes and Julie Jablonski each met BIG EAST and ECAC standards for the first time this season with times of 16:54.16 and 17:00.22, respectively. Fellow rookie Alexandra Clinton also qualified for BIG EAST competition with a time of 17:31.73 in section two of the event.
The men's team also found success in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Junior Pat Dupont set a new personal-best by nearly 14 seconds and crossed the finish line fourth at 8:54.29, qualifying him for BIG EAST and IC4A competition. His time ranks third in the conference and 22nd in the nation. Sophomore Robert Molke took 14th with a personal-best, BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying mark of 9:07.01.
Sophomore Joseph Bubniak took sixth in section three of the 1,500-meter run with a BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying time of 3:50.74. It marked the first time Bubniak met IC4A standards this season. Sophomore Andrew Nelson finished fifth in section five of the 1,500 with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 3:54.65.
Junior Tito Medrano crossed the finish line 14th in the 5,000-meter run with a BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying mark of 14:12.79. Senior Steve Weeks met BIG EAST and IC4A standards for the first time this season placing 25th in the 5,000 with a time of 14:28.11.
April 23, 2011: Cornell Upstate | Results
At the Cornell Upstate Challenge, junior Ieva Staponkute took first and set a new facility record at Cornell, breaking the old record by .26 meters, in the triple jump with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying mark of 12.81 meters.
Flings Owusu-Agyapong took the 100-meter dash title with a time of 11.63, which ranks second in the conference, and finished second in the 200-meter dash at 24.64. She met BIG EAST and ECAC standards in both races.
The men and women's 4x100 meter relay teams each took second. The men's team, comprised of senior Sham Lewis, junior Darryl White, senior Victor Nwosu and freshman Donald Pollitt, crossed the finish line at 41.21 to qualify for IC4A competition.
White and Lewis also took seventh and eighth in the 100-meter dash with BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying times of 10.72 and 10.74, respectively. It marked the first time this season White met IC4A standards. He also met BIG EAST standards in the 200-meter dash for the first time with a mark of 22.06 seconds.
Representing the women's 4x100 squad was seniors Lareea Chisholm and Owusu-Agyapong and freshmen Ashley Keyes and SaDe Lewis, who finished in 47.06 seconds, meeting ECAC standards. Chisholm also finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 12.05, earning an ECAC qualifying time for the first time this season.
Lewis also took third in the finals of the 100-meter hurdles with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 14.42. In the men's 110-meter hurdles, junior Matt Callanan (14.49), Pollitt (14.56) and sophomore Franklin Taylor (14.66) took third, fourth and sixth, respectively.
In the field, Taylor also met BIG EAST and IC4A standards in the long jump with a jump of 7.25 meters, good for a third-place finish. Nwosu finished fifth, meeting conference standards for the first time this season with a leap of 7.18 meters.
Senior Kawku Boah finished second in the shot put with a BIG EAST qualifying mark of 15.13 meters. Senior Kelsey Rubeor took second in the long jump with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying leap of 5.80 meters.
May 1, 2011: Cornell Big Red
Senior Kwaku Boah and freshman Justin Murray each took first in their respective events at the Cornell Big Red Invitational on Sunday, May 1. Boah took the crown in the weight throw with a BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying heave of 53.73 meter, while Murray's time of 3:58.11 earned him first place in the 1,500 meter run.
Boah's mark in the weight throw topped his previous personal-best by 2.37 meters. Boah also finished third in the shot put with a throw of 14.52 meters. Junior Gregory Manning-Smith also competed in the 1,500 meter run, placing sixth with a time of 4:01.21.
Sophomore Tyler McCully ran a personal-best time of 22.55 seconds in the 200 meter dash, placing 12th overall. In the field, senior Evan Stivala took fourth in the high jump with a leap of 1.89 meters. Senior Nick Damato placed sixth in the javelin throw with a mark of 45.12 meters.
May 6, 2011: BIG EAST Championship- Day One | Men's Results | Women's Results
Senior Kelsey Rubeor leads the women's heptathlon with 3,328 points through four events on the first day of competition at the 2011 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Rubeor won the shot put with a throw of 13.82 meters, which was 1.66 meters more than the second-place finisher. She also finished third in the high jump and the 200-meter dash.
The Murrieta Valley, Calif. native entered the meet ranked second in the conference and looks to become the fifth consecutive Syracuse student-athlete to take the heptathlon title. The remaining three events will be contested tomorrow morning at Jumbo Elliott Track at Villanova Stadium.
Senior Kawku Boah finished eighth in the men's hammer throw with a heave of 53.74 meters.
May 7, 2011: BIG EAST Championship- Day Two | Men's Results | Women's Results
Senior Kelsey Rubeor and junior Tito Medrano were each crowned BIG EAST Champions in their respective events today at the 2011 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Villanova. Rubeor held onto her lead from day one to capture the heptathlon title, while Medrano defended his title in the 10,000-meter run.
The Orange women have now won five consecutive conference heptathlon championships. Rubeor won two out of the three remaining events today, including the javelin and the long jump. Throughout the past two days, she took first in three of the seven heptathlon events. Her 5,680 points are the second highest in BIG EAST history.
Rubeor also took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 5.98 meters. Medrano, the 2010 BIG EAST champion in the 10,000m run, led all runners across the finish line at 29:34.06 to take first for the second consecutive year.
The women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase contingent continued its success, securing spots two through four. Senior Katie Hursey led the Orange trio in second with a time of 10:18.12. Junior Heather Stephens and senior Cassie White followed in third and fourth place, respectively.
Senior Flings Owusu-Agyapong took third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.62 to advance to tomorrow’s finals.
In the women’s 10,000-meter run, sophomore Sarah Pagano and senior Catherine DeSarle placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
On the men’s side, junior Pat Dupont took third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:02.05. Junior Darryl White finished sixth in the preliminary round of the 100-meter dash to advance to tomorrow’s finals.
Also advancing to the finals in the 110-meter hurdles were freshman Donald Pollitt and sophomore Matthew Callanan. The duo took fourth and fifth, respectively in the preliminary round today.
Junior Mark Melilli finished third overall in the javelin with a throw of 62.44 meters. In the long jump, sophomore Frank Taylor and senior Victor Nwosu secured spots six and seven, respectively.
After two days of competition, the Orange women are tied for second place, while the men are sitting in fourth. The women are tied with South Florida with 44 points, just six points behind Louisville, who leads the pack.
With the men and women’s 5,000-meter run and the women’s triple jump yet to be contested, the Orange is looking for more success on the final day. Competition will resume tomorrow, May 8, at 10 a.m.

Junior Ieva Staponkute highlighted the final day of competition today at the 2011 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships, capturing the women’s triple jump crown. After three days of action at Villanova University, the Orange women finished seventh overall, while the men took ninth in the conference.
Staponkute was ranked first in the BIG EAST coming into the championships and held onto the top spot with a jump of 12.81 meters.
In the finals of the 100-meter dash, senior Flings Owusu-Agyapong took third with a time of 11.55. Owusu-Agyapong also ran the second leg of the 4x100 meter relay, which took sixth overall with a time of 46.73. She was joined by senior Lareea Chisholm and freshmen Ashley Keyes and SaDe Lewis.
After winning the heptathlon title yesterday, senior Kelsey Rubeor placed eighth in the high jump with a leap of 1.70 meters. Junior Lauren Penney crossed the finish line fourth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:21.45. Junior Heather Stephens and senior Katie Hursey finished 10th and 11th, respectively.

May 13-15, 2011: ECAC Track & Field Championships | Results
Flings Owusu-Agyapong, Ieva Staponkute and Natalie Busby each won individual titles in their respective events at the ECAC Track & Field Championships, hosted by Princeton from May 13-15. The Orange women took seventh overall as a team in a field, which included 52 other participating institutions.
Owusu-Agyapong took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.79. Staponkute recorded a personal best mark in the triple jump to take the crown with a leap of 12.85 meters. Busby led all runners in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:16.74. Busby currently ranks ninth in the East Region, while Staponkute is 12th.
Freshman SaDe Lewis finished seventh in her heat and 14th overall in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.26.
May 13-15, 2011: IC4A Championships | Results
Nine student-athletes competed for the Orange. Senior Victor Nwosu took second in his heat and 10th overall in the long jump with a leap of 6.98 meters.
In the 110-meter hurdles, junior Matthew Callanan placed third in his heat and 10th overall with a time of 14.60. Freshman Donald Pollitt finished sixth in his heat and 14th overall with a time of 14.70. Sophomore Frank Taylor's time of 14.87 earned him second place in his heat and 21st overall. Taylor also competed in the long jump, placing sixth in his heat and 14th overall with a leap of 6.91 meters.
Sophomore Robert Molke finished sixth in his heat and 14th overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:08.59.
In the 100-meter dash, junior Darryl White crossed the finish line sixth in his heat with a time of 10.91, while senior Sham Lewis took second in his heat at 10.94. White and Lewis took 18th and 21st overall, respectively.
Junior Steve Weeks ran a time of 14:37.30 in the 5,000-meter event to finish 17th in his heat and 28th overall.
Wrapping up competition in the field for SU was junior Mark Melilli in the javelin. After earning All-BIG EAST honors last weekend, Melilli placed ninth in his heat and 19th overall with a throw of 54.04 meters.
May 26-28, 2011: NCAA East Preliminary Round | Results
Four members of the Syracuse University track and field team ranked among the top athletes in the country this weekend at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds. Junior Tito Medrano, and seniors Flings Owusu-Agyapong, Katie Hursey and Kelsey Rubeor have each advanced to the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa from June 8-11.
After winning back-to-back BIG EAST Championships in the 10,000 meter run, Medrano continued his run of success in the post season. He placed fifth overall with a personal-besttime of 29:10.01 to earn a spot at nationals.
Hursey finished second in heat two of the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best time of 10:08.44. On the sprints side, Owusu-Agyapongrepresented the Orange well in the 100 meter dash, placing third in heat five of the prelims.Her personal-best time of 11.60 advancedher to the semifinals. In the semifinals,her time of 11.67 was enough to secure a spot at nationals.
Rubeor had previously secured a slot at nationals in the heptathlon. She competed in the javelin at the NCAA Preliminary’s finishing 16th in flight three with a throw of 40.72 meters.
Three other runners joined Hursey in the steeplechase. Senior Cassie White (10:33.42) and junior Natalie Busby (10:38.59) took seventh and ninth, respectively, in heat one. Junior Heather Stephens placed sixth in heat three with a time of 10:19.97.
In the 5,000-meter run, junior Lauren Penney took 14th in heat two with a time of 16:52.03. Three members of the Orange competed in the 10,000-meter run. Sophomore Sarah Pagano led all SU runners across the finish line in 23rd with a time of 34:20.73. Senior Catherine DeSarle (34:45.04) and freshman Lauren Kersjes (35:36.35) followed in the 33rd and 43rdspots, respectively.
In the field for the women, the BIG EAST and ECAC triple jump champion, junior Ieva Staponkute placed eighth in flight three with a leap of 12.29 meters.
All-BIG EAST 110-meter hurdler, freshman Donald Pollitt, placed sixth in heat five of the prelims with a time of 14.38 to advance to the semifinals where he took eighth with a time of 14.55. Junior Matt Callanan finished seventh in heat three with a time of 14.71. In the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, junior Pat Dupont took seventh with a time of 9:01.88.

Katie Hursey became Syracuse’s fourth student-athlete to earn U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America status this week at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Drake University. She recorded a 14th-place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase to garner second-team All-America honors.
Hursey advanced to the finals after finishing sixth in her heat in the semifinals on Friday. She crossed the finish line in the finals in a time of 10:43.28. She joined junior Tito Medrano on the second team, while seniors Kelsey Rubeor (heptathlon) and Flings Owusu-Agyapong (100m dash) received honorable mention All-America honors.
