Syracuse vs. Providence
February 20, 2013
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Michael Carter-Williams, Sophomore, Guard
Can you talk about the offense in the first half? What got you guys going?
“It was close for a little bit but then we got moving. We ran the curl play, which is a basic motion offense that worked really well for us. Our defense was great in the first half too, and it led us to fastbreaks.”
You guys have had trouble scoring points lately. Was the first half kind of a shock for you?
“It was good for us. We were back to playing Syracuse basketball. We were not struggling with our offense. We were getting movement and we were getting good shots. Nobody was being selfish. We were just moving the ball and it was successful for us.”
It was 12-12 and then you went on a 31-4 run. What happened?
Our defense. We were getting turnovers and forcing them to take tough shots. They missed some easy ones that they usually don’t miss. We got the rebounds and kept pushing it. We shot great in the first half. James (Southerland) was shooting great. We just had an all-around game from everyone.”
C.J Fair, Junior, Guard
So it was 12-12 and you went to a 31-4 run. What happened?
“We got a couple of good rebounds and steals, and we are a very good fastbreak team. Once we got the crowd involved, we took off.”
You guys have been having trouble scoring points. How good was it to get your offensive swagger back?
“It is very important because we are starting to get James (Southerland) back in the mix, and we have been playing very good defense. When we are knocking down shots, I think we are one of the best teams in the country.”
James Southerland, Senior, Forward
The first half was probably the best half you have played so far in the BIG EAST. What was the key to the offense?
“Just letting everything come to us, prioritizing our defense before our offense, and making sure I do what I need to on defense.
You were 5-for-6 in the first half. What changes did you make to shoot so well?
“I definitely think my shot selection was better, and I did a good job moving on the floor even though I should have moved even more. My teammates did a good job finding me, especially Mike (Carter-William) on that long three, knowing where I was on the court. We also did a good job of playing defense and getting out on the break.”
