OFFENSIVE LINE
Return to 2013 Football Preview
Pat Perles, a former assistant at Michigan State and most recently with the Kansas City Chiefs, takes over the task of putting together the Orange offensive line. On his priority list is replacing two departed starters – tackle Justin Pugh, who was drafted in the first round of the NFL draft by the New York Giants, and guard Zach Chibane, who signed as a free agent with the Buffalo Bills.
The anchor of the line – senior center Macky MacPherson – has two seasons of first-string status under his belt. MacPherson, the grandson of legendary SU coach Dick MacPherson, is a Rimington Award candidate, which is presented to the nation’s best center. He has played in all 37 games in his career, including the last 25 as a starter.
The coaching staff has groomed redshirt freshman Jason Emerich to back up MacPherson at center. Sophomore Seamus Shanley will compete at the center spot, as well.
Pugh and Chibane held up the left side of the line for most of 2012. In their absence, Perles has moved Sean Hickey from his starting right tackle spot to the left. Hickey, a junior, missed the 2010 and 2011 seasons due to injuries but joined the first string last fall. He will be backed up by redshirt freshman Kyle Knapp. Like Hickey, sophomore guard Rob Trudo is jumping from right to left. He took over a starting spot in the 2012 Pittsburgh game and did not give it up the rest of the way. Redshirt freshman Omari Palmer and junior Jesse Wolf-Gould round out the left guard candidates.
Baldwinsville native Nick Robinson, a sophomore, is the front runner at right guard. He will be pressed by sophomore John Miller, who comes to Syracuse after earning second team all-conference recognition at Los Angeles Harbor College.
Former starting guard Ivan Foy has made the move to right tackle. He began the 2012 campaign as a first-stringer. Senior Daniel Anyaegbunam and freshman Jon Burton are penciled in at right tackle, as well.
Rounding out the offensive line candidates for the Orange are sophomore Michael Lasker, and freshmen Alex Hayes, Jamar McGloster and Kendall Moore.
