Return to 2013 Football Preview
Linebackers coach Clark Lea takes over a unit that was an area of strength for Syracuse’s 2012. Spring ball was used on a minor reconstruction project – starting middle linebacker Siriki Diabate, who finished second on the team in tackles, had completed his eligibility, creating an opening.
Senior Marquis Spruill, who started 12 games and made 64 tackles on the outside last fall, is the likely candidate to move into the middle. Junior Dyshawn Davis emerged as a big-play defender on the outside, accumulating 14 tackles for losses, hauling in an interception and recovering two fumbles, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Junior Cameron Lynch, who earned two starts a year ago, is ready to step forward as a first-stringer.
Senior Lewellyn Coker, who has played in all 38 games during his three seasons, should see plenty of field time again. Senior Zachary McCarrell, sophomore Hernz Laguerre and freshman Marquez Hodge from Miami Central High School are also in competition at the spot behind Lynch.
Junior Luke Arciniega enrolled at Syracuse in January 2013 after transferring from Sierra College (Calif.). He’s lined up at middle linebacker behind Spruill, along with senior Femi Aliyu and redshirt freshman James Washington.
Backing up Davis are sophomore Oliver Vigille and junior Josh Kirkland, a transfer from Butler Community College (Kan.) who played in the 2012 NJCCA National Championship game. Feshman Alryk Perry from Glenwood School (Ala.) rounds out the linebacker group.
