Recruiting Reminders
Official Visits
Official Visit: Any visit to a college campus by a college-bound student-athlete or his or her parents partially or fully paid for by the college.
Who can Participate: Prospective student-athletes may be accompanied by their parents or legal guardian.
Number of Visits: Per Bylaw 13.6.2.1 (One-Visit Limitation) institutions may only fi nance one offi cial visit to its campus for a prospective student-athlete. Prospective-student athletes may not take more than fi ve expense-paid visits to Division I institutions prior to their graduation from high school.
Length of Visit: Offi cial visits are not to last more than 48 hours. According to Bylaw 13.6.4.1 (48-Hour Period Defi ned) the 48-hour
period begins at the time the prospective student-athlete arrives on the institution’s campus.
Entertainment: During official visits, institutions may provide reasonable entertainment for a prospective student-athlete, their parents
or guardians, and spouse only within a 30-mile radius of the campus. (Bylaw 13.6.7.1). A maximum $40/day is permitted to pay
for the cost of entertaining. It is not permissible to entertain other relatives or friends (including dates) of a prospective student-athlete
at any time. (Bylaw 13.5.7.5(a)).
Meals: Prospective student-athletes, their parents or guardians, spouses, and children may not be given more than three meals and
one reasonable snack/day. The cost of the meals must be comparable to those provided to student-athletes during the academic year.

Complimentary Admissions: A prospective student-athlete may be provided a maximum of 3 complimentary admissions to a home
game at any facility within the 30-mile radius. The prospective student-athlete, as well as those accompanying them, must provide a
valid form of identification in order to collect their tickets. If a prospective student-athlete is a member of a nontraditional family (e.g.
- divorce, separation), Syracuse may provide up to two additional complimentary admissions in order to accommodate the parents
accompanying the prospective student-athlete. Prospective student-athletes may not be given complimentary admissions to a postseason
conference tournament. (Bylaw 13.6.7.2,13.6.7.2.1, and 13.6.7.2.2)
Boosters: Boosters, donors, and/or former players may not have any contact with a prospective student-athlete or their parents or
legal guardians during an official visit to campus.
Publicity Before Commitment: Prior to a prospective student-athlete’s signing of an NLI or prior to the institution receiving a
fi nancial deposit in response to its offer of admission, institutions may only publicly comment to confirm whether it is recruiting the
prospective student-athlete. (Bylaw 13.10.2.1). Furthermore, institutions shall not publicize (or arrange for publicity of) a prospective
student-athletes visit to campus.
Unofficial Visits
Unofficial Visit: Visits paid for by college-bound student-athletes or their parents.
Number of Unofficial Visits: A prospective student-athlete may visit a member institution and his or her own expense an unlimited
number of times. Prospective student-athletes may also may unoffi cial visits prior to their senior year in high school (Bylaw 13.7.1)
Length: There is no limit on how long an unoffi cial visit may last.
Lodging: A prospective student-athlete may stay in a student-athletes dorm so long as they pay the regular institutional rate for such
lodging (Bylaw 13.7.2.1.3)
Entertainment: Institutions may not pay or expenses or provide entertainment to prospective student-athletes during unofficial visits.

Meals: A prospective student-athlete on an unoffi cial visit may pay the actual cost of meals (or the regular cost of training-table meals)
and eat with other prospective student-athletes who are on offi cial visits or with currently enrolled student-athletes.
Complimentary admissions: Institutions may provide up to three complimentary admissions to a home athletics event (so long as it
is within a 30-mile radius of main campus) through a pass list. The prospective student-athlete, as well as those accompanying them,
must provide a valid form of identification in order to collect their tickets. Students on unoffi cial visits may not be seated in the press
box, special seating box(es), or bench area. If a prospective student-athlete is a member of a nontraditional family (e.g. - divorce or
separation), the institution may provide up to two additional complimentary admissions in order to accommodate the parents accompanying
the prospective-student athlete. Institutions are prohibited from providing complimentary admissions to a postseason conference
tournament, or an NCAA championship or other post-season contests. (Bylaw 13.7.2 and Bylaw 13.7.2.3)
Transportation: During an unoffi cial visit, the institution may provide the prospective student-athlete and those persons accompanying
them with transportation to practice and competition sites in the prospects sport, other institutional facilities, and to home athletics
contests. An institutional staff member must accompany the prospect during the trip. Please note - the 30-mile radius rule only
applies to offi cial visits. (Bylaw 13.5.1 and 13.5.3)
Boosters: Boosters may not provide prospective student-athletes transportation to or from campus during an unoffi cial visit.
Activities During Unoffi cial Visits: Institutions may not arrange miscellaneous, personalized recruiting aids during an unoffi cial visit.
Personalized recruiting aids include personalized jerseys and decorative items and special additions to any location the prospective
student-athlete will visit (such as a hotel room, locker room, arena, etc.). Prospective student-athletes are also not permitted to engage
in any game-day simulations (such as running onto the fi eld with the team) during an unoffi cial visit.
Coaches: High-school coaches may be given a maximum of two complimentary admissions to a home-contest via high school coach
pass list, or they may accompany a prospective student-athlete as one of their guests. Institutions may not pay for food and refreshments,
lodging, or the cost of transportation. Further, an institution may not reimburse a high school coach for expenses incurred while
transporting a prospective student-athlete to an on-campus visit. (Bylaw 13.8.1 and 13.8.1.2).

However, they are permitted to participate in entertainment activities involving a prospective student-athlete on an offi cial visit so long as it is held at the home of an institutional staff member. Furthermore, athletics department staff members (e.g. recruiting coordinators and administrative assistants) may participate in off-campus entertainment with a prospective student- athlete so long as the entertainment is within a 30-mile radius of the school.

Spouses: The spouse of an institutional athletics department staff member is permitted to transport a prospective student-athlete between campus and the airport during an offi cial visit so long as the airport is within 30 miles of the institution. They may also have off-campus contact with a prospective student-athlete, so long as it is within a 30-mile radius of the school, during offi cial visits only. However, spouses are permitted to have recruiting contacts with
any prospective student-athlete during an on-campus visit.
