Syracuse vs. Maryland

Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Maryland head coach Randy Edsall
Opening Statement:
“Right now (Andrew Isaacs) is just down the street at Crouse Hospital. Hopefully there’s not going to be anything further, that there’s no nerve damage. He can go home on the plane with us. My hats off to him because that’s a tough injury and just to see how was responding to that. He was just more worried about how he was going to get back and help his teammates than worried about himself. That was unfortunate.
“I’m just very proud of our team today, in terms of how we battled adversity coming into today. Guys that needed to step up and who were playing for the first time today, they got opportunities and played really well. It was a great team effort. Offensively, we got off to the fast start we wanted to. I wish we could have finished more. Defensively, we might have given up some yards, but we didn’t give up the points and that’s the number one thing. There are things we need to work on and get better at, but we scored six points on defense – the 86 yard interception return for a touchdown. Our special teams did very well, too, with the blocked point that led to points, too. It was a total team effort, and if we can continue to play good football and get all three phases contributing, then we have an opportunity to win more ball games.
On (receiver) Jacquille Veii coming in:
“He did what what we wanted him to do. We fit him into that special package that we have; a package we try to utilize. Again, our coaches do a really good job finding ways to move the ball and utilize all of our personnel, in any way that we can. Having him back there in that set was very productive for us today. It was something we used this week and other teams will have to practice that. We’ll see where we go from there.
On whether Andrew Isaacs' injury season-ending:
“I would think so. I can’t say any more than that because I don’t have any more than that. It just seems that, that would be a season ending injury.”
On Maryland’s special teams play:
“Well coach Powell does a tremendous job with special teams. They did such a great job of executing because of the block. The play was a return. When they lined up it turned into a block because they left the two inside guys up. And we said if they don’t do that; we’re turning it into a block. So again, that’s great by Andre coming up with that and it was well executed by our guys.”
On whether the interception return for a touchdown was a turning point:
“That was a big turning point. They were getting ready to go in and then William Likely picks to the sideline and goes the distance. Momentum things like that really help you, especially on the road. If they were to go in and score, now they get the place going a little bit. We’re starting to develop this mentality that we just play every play like it’s our last play. When that one is over, you go on to the next one and you don’t worry about it, if they move the ball, so what, you just go to next play and you just keep playing until you stop them or they score. That’s the kind of mentality that you have to have and were starting to believe in that.”
On concern that the offense isn’t spending enough time on the field:
“We are who we are. We have skilled players. When you have guys like that who can take it the distance. Would I like to sit there and maybe grind out 10 minute drives to keep our defense off the field, yes, I would. But I don’t know if we have the guys to be able to do that. We’ll go into some games and if from a game standpoint if I think that’s what we need to do, maybe we will huddle up and try to milk the clock a bit. We’ve got some issues that we have to address defensively now. I’ll talk more about that tomorrow. We’re going to have to have a lot more guys step up. We’re going to have to take a look at some things as we go and we’re getting a little bit depleted right now.”
On how is it for him returning to Syracuse (his alma mater):
“As I said all week long, this place has been very special for me. They gave me the opportunity to come here and get an education. And to be a part of the Syracuse Orange football family. I have great friends, great memories. I met my wife here. My daughter was born here. My son went to school here for a semester. I’m just glad that we won. I’ll root for Syracuse every other game, except this one. Coach Shafer is a very good coach. They have a good team and they’ll win many more games the rest of this year. I enjoyed my time here and I’m grateful. I’m glad we won.”
On whether or not this was a ‘must-win’ game:
“I heard somebody say that this was a must win. We want to win every week, there’s no such thing as must-win. If games become must-win we’re in the wrong profession. We want to win every weekend. I’m just glad that we got a win, our kids played well. We’re 3-1. Now we go to Indiana and we’ll see what happens there. We’ll prepare well. We’ll go out and play hard, and hopefully, come out with a win. It’s hard to win at this level, it is hard. For them going out there and to get a win, now it’s going to take a few days for them to recover. It’s hard. To go on the road in this place, believe me I coached here, on both sides of it; it’s tough. Again, I’m just so proud of our guys to come out here and get this win. Every win we get we cherish. Every game we try to do our best to get a win. What these kids are going to give us.”
On quarterback CJ Brown:
“CJ understands that he and I always get to much blame or too much credit. He did a great job. He ran our offense and did the things that he had to do. He’s a good kid. He had a good day and he’s going to continue to have a good day. He’s going to have a good year. We ask a lot out of him, it’s tough what we ask him to do. He’s a trooper and a guy that is a competitor. He did a lot of good things today, so I’m pleased and happy for him.”
