Student-Athlete Quotes - Holy Cross
Andrew White III, R-Sr., G
Did you expect the team to shoot as many 3-pointers as you are this season?
“I was recruited to score. The coaches give me a green light to shoot as many times as I do. With the coaches, it’s never enough so I need to keep doing more and shooting more, to answer what they say. We have a lot of guys with talent and guys who can shoot. By me hitting shots early it will help everyone.”
Coming into the season it seemed like you and Tyler Lydon would be the guys shooting three’s, but the team took 25 three’s tonight. What are your thoughts on that?
“We have a lot of guys who are capable shooters. When the ball moves and you have a lot of talent, it gives guys an opportunity to get better shots than they would if they were the focal point of the opposing defense. We have guys who put in work early in the summer, like Tyus Battle, Frank Howard, John Gillon and Tyler Roberson, who are working on their jump shot every day.”
How hard is it to defend a team when they are making a lot of three’s like you did today?
“Three’s add up quickly. They went on a run and got the lead relatively close, and we hit a few three’s in a row. When you have guys hitting shots like that it takes a lot of pressure off your defense.”
Tyus Battle, Fr., G
Coach says when the ball goes in the hoop it makes it a much easier game. Seems like a lot of guys were feeling it tonight, would you agree?
“We got stops in the zone tonight to turn the ball over, then we would work it into our big men and they would kick it out for easy three’s”.
As well as you played, coach says there is a lot more you can do on defense. Do you feel that?
“Definitely. We went into man-to-man a little bit at the end of the game and we have to continue to work on that, as well as the press. Our zone looked pretty good. We have to limit them in the middle and then I think we’ll look really good.”
Monmouth is from down your way in New Jersey. What do you anticipate for Friday?
“Monmouth is going to be a really tough team. They have a lot of really good returning players, so it will be a really good game and it will be a good learning experience for us.”
Tyler Roberson, Sr., F
Coach said you struggled rebounding the ball on Friday against Colgate. Would you agree that you did a better job tonight, especially in the first half?
“They play a matchup zone, so the boards are going to be open. When they did miss shots, we did a good job exploiting that. We have to continue to do that in the future and continue to play good defense.”
What do you think is the biggest weakness defensively that needs to be corrected so far?
“Sometimes teams are getting open three’s on us, but that is something minor that we will correct and be better on in the future.”
You’ve been working super hard on your jump shot. Is it satisfying to see shots go in after working countless hours on your shot?
“Definitely. It’s not the only thing I worked on this summer, but I put tons of hours in working on my shot. It’s good to see the ball go into the hoop and I want to be consistent with that in the future. I have a lot more confidence in my shot and even if I miss, I still have to stay positive and continue to take shots.”
Frank Howard, So., G
You guys had a lot of defense turning into offense. How is the defense playing and even in two games into the season, there have been some major improvements?
“We have some things to work out. We gave up some open shots and rebounds. I think that we will continue to play hard. We are going to watch some tape and there are some things that we are going to clean up and we will keep going.”
The team took 25 3-pointers and made a bunch of them. Is it that everyone has gotten better, is it that everyone has the green light to shoot threes? Why are you shooting a lot of them and why are you making a lot of them?
“Coach thought that everybody would be making three’s. So it isn’t a ‘green light thing’. You have to call for it and step up and make the shot. The guys have worked hard on it. If we have open shots, right now, then we can take them – and we have. We may not shoot this well the entire year, but every game we come in with a different mindset and see how the shots fall. Our guys can shoot and we are all versatile.”
Would you agree that opponents are having to prepare for the team's outside shooting?
“I think that is a part of our identity and we have formed our identity. I think as a team we have shot the ball well and the guys are respected so they have to pick their poison.”
John Gillon, Gr., G
You provided a tremendous spark for the team with 15 points tonight. How do you feel?
“I feel okay. Everybody wants to start, but it doesn’t always work like that. I am just trying to make the most of my opportunities.”
In a game like this where everyone is taking jumpers, what does that do for your offense?
“There is no answer if we are all hitting jumpers and when you go to man (to-man) you will get beaten that way too. With our depth, our smarts, and our athleticism, it is really hard to stop us.”
How is the zone progressing?Do you feel like you are at the point where you are anticipating passes?
“Definitely. I got into a few passing lanes today. I am just trying to keep the offense off-balance and get them to force the ball back and forth uncomfortably and make up time. I am just trying to keep them off balance and be active.”
Tyler Lydon, So, F
It is early but how fun is this team to play with?
“It is a lot of fun. All of these guys are really challenging. Everybody has a different job and can do a lot of things. Being versatile, we can go out there and we have a lot of fun playing with each other.”
You guys had five different players make a three tonight. Can you talk about having that many weapons and what that does for an offense when you can stretch the floor like that?
“It is dangerous. Anytime you have guys that can stretch the floor and make the right plays, I think that is one thing we do really well offensively. We can get going. We are just able to knock down those shots.”
What was it like when you hit that first three?
“It felt great. I tried to make them early on. In basketball you won’t make every shot you take, but you have to continue to take them.”
