Coach Boeheim Quotes - Monmouth
Syracuse Men’s Basketball vs. Monmouth
Nov. 18, 2016
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Coach Boeheim Opening Statement:
“I thought the first half we did a really good job of getting Andrew (White) the ball and he was our offense. He kept us in there when we were struggling a little bit offensively. He made big shots and got us some separation.
"The second half our defense was really good. They got some looks that they missed, but our defense was pretty good. We were pushing them off spots and making them take tough shots. I thought the start to the second half we were really efficient. We got on the boards. I thought DaJuan (Coleman) did a really good job on both boards. I think Roby (Tyler Roberson) has to get in there more. We were trying to get Tyler Lydon the ball a little bit in the second half on the low post and we’re not really good at that yet. When he (Tyler Lydon) gets it now he has to finish those, but that’s something we can work on.
"We had 10 turnovers in the second half. We can’t have our point guards giving the ball up like that. They didn’t score any points in the second half -- except on our turnovers -- for a long time. I think what happens is you play teams that can’t guard and you just go by them, now you’re playing a team that can guard people. And that team is a good team, make no mistake about it. They’ll be in the tournament at the end of the year. I think they’ve got a really good team. Their defense was good tonight. They probably missed a couple of shots that they thought they could make. It was a good win. They’re a good team. We’ll try to get better next week.”
How encouraging was what you saw from Taurean (Thompson) tonight?
“He didn't get back on defense two or three times. He didn’t rotate back in the first half. Then he got those two layups underneath in his rotation. Tyler Roberson went back in the game and he went down there and blocked the shot. That’s where Taurean (Thompson) is supposed to be. He’s got to learn that because you could make two jump shots if you give up. It’s not positive.”
Did you change things defensively at all going into the second half?
“No, I don't think so. I think we just did a better job of keeping them from penetrating. In the first half, they were getting in the lane and getting it out. They got it down low a couple times. I think we just did a little bit of a better job keeping them up front. The guards were good. That little kid (Justin Robinson) is tough. He gets in the lane. We did a pretty good job on him, and we found his shooters when he got in there. Our rotations were good. We were getting to shooters. I thought it was a really good defensive effort. And when they don't get in any good shots, and they do sometimes, they don't make it because they haven’t had one in a while. That’s pretty much what happened. They got a couple good looks and didn’t make them.”
Against teams who defend better, are you looking for John (Gillon) to distribute the ball better?
“He had nine assists the last game in 18 minutes. I’m not worried about John. He’s a good player. He played against a good kid today and tried to go by him once and it wasn’t there. He had a couple mistakes. Frank (Howard) had a couple mistakes. That’s why we play these games, to try and learn from these mistakes. He’s (John Gillon) a really good player, and he’s going to have some games when he plays really good.”
