Game one seemed like a little bit of a slow start, but then you guys found the groove. Would you agree with that?
“Yeah, that's going to happen for this game. I think we started picking it up, our defense was good. We blocked some shots. I think a lot of good things came out of today.”
Can we expect to see that press maybe a little bit more than we have in the last few years?”
“Oh yeah, definitely. We work on it everyday so hopefully we use it a lot more instead of just using it at the end of the game.”
Do you like playing that up-tempo press?
“Oh, I love it! It just leads to easy transition buckets.”
Do you think that first half was just getting some jitters out?
“Yeah, definitely. It’s going to happen. It's the first game playing against another team and testing out our offense. So, I think we adjusted well later in the game.”
Frank Howard, Jr., G
You guys rebounded the ball well tonight, particularly the guards, is that something you want to do going forward?
“Definitely. Coach wants the guards to get in there. I want to stick my nose in there and get a few long rebounds. We were also able to get out in transition better when I would rebound the ball.”
What would you say about Oshae Brissett’s game, because he seems to be a pretty confident guy?
“When you have talent, you should be confident. We push that confidence in him every day. We want him to be confident, score and shoot the ball.”
“I’m glad he did what he did today. He’s very versatile. He can shoot, rebound and defend from any position.”
Bourama Sidibe, Fr., C
What did you think of your first game?
“I did alright. I need to continue to get used to playing in this type of environment. I blocked shots very well tonight.”
I assume blocking shots comes naturally to someone of your size, would you agree?
“Since I was younger, I always blocked shots, so it definitely comes natural to me.”
Did you feel any jitters after Paschal Chukwu fouled out?
“I did not feel anything, I just go play. Never get nervous, I’m used to this from high school.”
“When I was in high school I was the captain of my team, so I had to get them ready to play and not be nervous.”
Howard Washington, Fr., G
Tell me about the way that you guys pressed today.
“Just like you said, the game was going kind of slow. They were switching everything and it was hard to get into our offense.”
“Once we got in the press it picked things up and forced a bunch of turnovers. We executed off of that and that just picked the game up.”
How comforting is it to be a guy who plays at the top of the zone when you know you’ve got those two shot blockers back there? Does that allow you to be a little more adventurous up there?
“It allows you to gamble a little bit more. You’re not supposed to gamble in a zone, but you can take one or two a game. Even if you get beat you have 7’2” and 6’10” shot blockers coming up to clean it up.”
Paschal Chukwu, Jr., C
What are your thoughts on the success you had blocking shots?
“We focus on defense mostly at practice, when they go to the basket, I’m supposed to be there.”
Would you say that your free throw problems are all in your head?
“That’s probably true. I just need to calm down. Last year, I didn’t think too much. In practice, I made about 60% of my free throws. I just need to calm down and replicate that.”
Is the press something we are going to see more of this season?
“It was successful today, so I would say yes. It’s something we work on during practice, so as time goes along we will get better at it.”
Geno Thorpe, Gr., G
Coach Griffin was key in you getting here. Can you walk me through how that worked?
“Griff had a relationship with Scoochie Smith, the point guard from Dayton. I think Scoochie is in the league right now and I knew him since eighth grade. When I first met Griff, he told me that he mentored Scooch and that's how we built that connection.”
You’ve kind of been under the radar for a bit, do you feel that way?
“No, not really. I mean, every time I’m playing, I’m playing with a chip on my shoulder and I’m just trying to do me.”
What’s one thing you want to accomplish this season?
“I just want us to be a collective group and win as much as possible. I want to get back to the tournament. So, I think the goal overall is to just get back to the tournament.”
