Notre Dame 74 SU 60
Notre Dame Player of the Year candidate Troy Murphy scored 34 points to lead the Irish to a 74-60 triumph against Syracuse. The defeat was SU’s first to an unranked opponent this season.
The Irish struck first and led SU by as many as 13 points in the first half. A three-pointer from DeShaun Williams, a basket by Preston Shumpert and a basket and free throw from Damone Brown helped shave the margin to six at the break.
The Syracuse momentum continued into the second half. SU, led in part by two three-pointers from Shumpert, cut the deficit to four with 14:15 left in the contest. The hosts followed with a 14-5 run to grab the lead for good. Shumpert had 15 second-half points and finished with 25. Billy Celuck had 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Irish held Syracuse to a season-low 36.9 shooting percentage while forcing 22 turnovers. Notre Dame outscored the Orangemen at the foul line, 26-4.
The victory marked the first time that Notre Dame has beaten SU since their 83-63 victory at the Joyce Center on January 21, 1998.
