Mark Trumbo joined the Orange as an academic coordinator in July 2013. He was promoted to assistant athletics director for student-athlete engagement in July 2019 and served in that role until Aug. 2023.
In June 2016, Trumbo launched “The S-Project.” A unique, comprehensive program, “The S-Project” is designed to equip Orange student-athletes with the skills and knowledge they need to have successful careers at Syracuse University and beyond. The programming pyramid focuses on personal enhancement, social responsibility, leadership development, personal development, and professional development.
Trumbo also advises the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which is comprised of representatives from all 20 varsity sports. SAAC has earned the One University Award, recognizing the top student organization on campus in 2016, 2018 and 2019. The group is heavily involved in community outreach and engages in dialogue to improve the quality of life for Orange student-athletes. In 2018, Trumbo was named “Advisor of the Year” for his contributions to SAAC.
In 2021, Trumbo partnered with the College of Professional Studies to launch CRL 300: Leadership Applications and Behaviors. A one-credit course dedicated to educating student-athletes in leadership development and theory.
Trumbo also serves as the Sport Administrator for the Spirit program.
In 2017, Trumbo received the John Maxwell Transformational Leader Top 100 Award. The honor is presented to leaders across all industries for making a significant impact in their community and leadership initiatives. Additionally, he was named to Greater Syracuse’s “40 Under 40” list, which recognizes local professionals under the age of 40 who exemplify leadership through their business accomplishments and community involvement.
Before becoming Syracuse’s student-athlete engagement coordinator in 2016, Trumbo was Syracuse’s academic coordinator for men’s and women’s soccer and cross country/track & field for three years.
Trumbo worked at Ball State University prior to joining the Orange. In his time at Ball State, he provided academic services to more than 450 student-athletes. Trumbo created the SASS Choice Award for upperclass male and female student-athletes who demonstrated a high rate of academic achievement. In addition, he started the “Take Flight” student-athlete development program, which focused on leadership, as well as career and personal development.
Trumbo is a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors and Student-Athlete Development Professionals for Athletes (N4A). He served as chair for the organization’s research committee from 2014-2015 and was a member of the N4A Board of Directors as the division director for student-athlete enhancement from 2019-21.
In 2022, Trumbo led a team of industry experts in publishing the first-ever white paper for student-athlete development in college athletics. He will serve as lead faculty for the Professional Development Institute for Student-Athlete Development as well.
Previously, Trumbo served as the head golf coach at Burris Laboratory School in Muncie, Indiana and worked as an intern for the Erie SeaWolves minor league baseball team.
Trumbo earned a bachelor’s degree in personal finance and real estate from Clarion University. He holds a master’s degree in physical education and sports management with a concentration in higher education from Ball State.
Trumbo lives in Liverpool with his wife, Kristy, and their three children.
