Jeff Hammerschmidt

Jeff Hammerschmidt was hired by head coach Dino Babers in the spring of 2021, bringing a wealth of collegiate and NFL coaching knowledge to the Orange program.
Hammerschmidt most recently served as the New York Jets’ special teams assistant for the last-five seasons. While he was in New York, the Jets special teams unit ranked fourth in the NFL for fewest penalties, while also ranking in the top-10 in total touchdowns (five), blocked punts (two), forced fumbles (three), kickoff return average (22.9) and kickoff return average against (21.3).
In 2018, Hammerschmidt assisted a special teams unit that was widely regarded as the best in the league, finishing in the top-five in kickoff return average (third; 26.9), punt return average (13.0) and field goal percentage (fourth; 91.7-percent)
He also spent four seasons at Colorado State as the special teams coordinator, also coaching running backs and tight ends. His career also includes stops at Arizona, Stanford, Indiana and Montana.
In his most-recent stint in the college game, he oversaw a Colorado State unit that finished No. 2 nationally in net punting, No. 17 in average kickoff return yards and No. 24 in average punt return yards in 2015. The Rams’ punter Hayden Hurst was a Ray Guy Award Finalist in 2015.
Hammerschmidt also has experience coaching at every level of the defense. He began his career in 1992 as a graduate assistant at Arizona, and has since worked with numerous current and former NFL players, including: Kris Dielman, Adewale Ogunleye, Antwaan Randle El and Brooks Reed.
As a player, he was a four-year letterman and three-year starting safety at Arizona. A first-team All-Pac-10 safety in 1989, he was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe award that same season as a senior, before earning his bachelor’s degree in sociology. He signed as a free agent with the LA Rams (1991) and spent the 1992 season playing for the Frankfurt Galaxy of the World League.
He and his wife Felicity have two children, Bryn and Bode.
