Kevin McGarry enters his second season as a defensive analyst in 2021, following a first season at SU that saw a trio of Orange freshman defenders earn Freshman All-America honors from various publications and the defensive unit as a whole was near the top of the nation in takeaways.
McGarry joined the Orange staff following a nine-year stint at San Diego State, where he held various roles on Rocky Long’s staff. He coached linebackers, special teams, was the director of player personnel and director of on campus recruiting in his roles through the years with the Aztecs.
McGarry has head coaching experience under his belt, serving as the head coach at the University of San Diego for eight seasons. He has a 39-37 record as a head coach, with five .500-or-better seasons and saw his squads earn a national ranking on three occasions. He took over as the head coach there after a 15-year tenure as the Toreros’ defensive coordinator and a member of the staff for 26 seasons.
He has a bachelor’s degree in English/diversified liberal arts and a master’s in educational administration from the University of San Diego. He and his wife Mary Anne have four sons, Pat, Mike, Timbo and Matt.
