A volunteer assistant at Florida for the last two seasons, including serving on staff during the Gators’ 2017 NCAA Men’s Track and Field Championship, Holland Sherrer has joined the Syracuse Track and Field program as an assistant coach.
Sherrer’s responsibilities will be to assist Dave Hegland with recruiting and development of the sprint, hurdle and jump events at Syracuse. Sherrer inherits a group that is coming off a strong 2018, highlighted by ACC Champion Angelo Goss and a 110-meter hurdles unit that was ranked No. 1 in the USTFCCCA event rankings for much of the year.
At Florida, Sherrer oversaw the Gators’ mid-distance runners and long sprinters. He made an immediate impact with the Gators in his first year on staff, helping half-miler Andres Arroyo qualify for the 2017 IAAF World Championships. With Sherrer’s help, Arroyo also won the 800 meters at SEC Indoor Championships, scored at NCAA Outdoor Championships (fifth place) for the first time in his career, and qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships for a fourth straight season.
In 2018 under Sherrer’s tutelage, the half-mile duo of Kyren Hollis and Justin Pacifico both set PRs, including Hollis’ fourth-place finish at the SEC Championships.
Prior to joining the Gators’ Sherrer was an All-American at Ole Miss and a qualifier for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. Sherrer competed for the Rebels from 2014-16 earning USTFCCCA Outdoor All-America honors in the 800-meters as a senior. He placed 12th at the NCAA Championships in 2016.
It was his second-straight trip to the NCAA Championships, after qualifying in 2015. Sherrer also won an SEC title in the DMR at Ole Miss in 2015.
A native of Deerfield, N.J. Sherrer’s collegiate career began at Rend Lake Community College, where he was a two-time NJCAA All-American and won an NJCAA Championship on the 4x800-meter relay team.
