Multiple tickets to Eugene, Oregon were punched on Friday, as Benne Anderson, Jamir Brown and Elijah Mallard all qualified for the NCAA Championship in their respective events. Two did so by equaling or surpassing their own school record in the process.
Anderson was first on the track, taking second in his heat of the 1,500-meter run (3:42.70), which earned him an automatic spot in the NCAA Semifinals in two weeks. He finished right on the heels of heat winner Gary Martin of Virginia to cruise his way into the NCAA Championships.
Brown then made easy work of his quarterfinal race in the 110-meter hurdles. He tied his own school record with a time of 13.25 seconds to take second in his heat – and second overall in the field – to earn an automatic spot in his first NCAA Outdoor Championships at the DI level. Brown finished second to only Auburn's Ja'Kobe Tharp (13.05 seconds), which is the world's second-fastest time this year.
Mallard closed the day by obliterating his own school record by almost a full second in the 400-meter hurdles. Mallard's personal-best time of 19.11 seconds advanced him to the NCAA Championships by taking fourth in his heat, but posting the eighth overall fastest time in the field, which advanced him on time.
Prior to this season, the school's 400-meter hurdle record had stood for 37 years, held by Martin Ellis in 1989. This year alone, Mallard has shaved a second and a half off that mark.
Julian Franjieh saw his season come to an end in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after posting a time of 8:50.38, which was 24th in the 48-man field.
Syracuse looks to add one more to its NCAA Championship qualifiers list on Saturday, as Selma Anderson will race in the 5,000-meter run semifinal.
