Former Syracuse men's basketball player Shaun Belbey '19, G'20 joined the Syracuse women's basketball staff as the Manager of Multimedia and Technology in January 2022. In this role, the former Orange letter winner will assist Acting Head Coach Vonn Read with all aspects of technology including film exchange, scouting data compilation and coaches analysis.Â
Belbey has been an assistant coach for Boeheim's Army, a team consisting of former Syracuse men's players competing in The Basketball Tournament (TBT), since 2020. This past summer, Belbey helped guide the Orange alums to the one million dollar winner-take-all prize earning the title of TBT champs for the first time. With Boeheim's Army, Belbey is responsible for recruiting players, running film sessions and editing film with Synergy Sports Tech to create scouting reports. Â
The Syracuse alum has been working as a player development coach since 2019 and trained NBA All-Star Isaiah Thomas to improve his skills prior to the 2019-20 season. He traveled to China with Thomas to train and help promote the NBA with NBA and NBA Cares. Belbey has trained a variety of professional basketball players including Moses Brown (Dallas Mavericks) and former Syracuse standouts Elijah Hughes (Utah Jazz) and Tyus Battle (Dinamo Sissari-Italy).Â
Belbey has interned at Pure Sweat Basketball in Los Angeles, Calif., where he worked for Drew Hanlen to assist in workouts with fifteen current NBA athletes including Bradley Beal, Joel Embiid, Jayson Tatum, Zach LaVine and Jordan Clarkson. In the summer of 2019 Belbey interned with Rob McClanaghan Basketball running drills for current NBA players including Elfrid Payton and Patrick Patterson.Â
While an undergraduate at Syracuse, Belbey spent two summers as a trainer with Professional Basketball Combine (PBC) where he helped organized a three-day event at the Mamba Sports Academy with 25 NBA draft prospects and 25 NBA executives and scouts from over 15 different NBA teams. While with the PBC, he ran on-court workouts for NBA draft prospects including Kendrick Nunn, Chris Silva and others.Â
Belbey joined the Syracuse men's basketball team as a walk-on in 2015, before earning a scholarship for his final two seasons from 2019-21. Belbey was a member of the 2015-16 men's basketball team which reached the Final Four.  His older brother, Kevin '13, G'16, L'16 was a student manager for the Orange from 2009-13 and serves as the General Manager for Boeheim's Army. Their brother, Ryan, also graduated from Syracuse in 2018.Â
Belbey was on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and earned Athletic Director's Honor Roll and ACC Academic Honor Roll recognition during his playing days at Syracuse.Â
He earned his bachelor's degree in sports management in 2019 and completed his master's in sport, venue and event management from the David B. Falk College of Sport & Human Dynamics at Syracuse in 2020.Â
