CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 18 Syracuse women's rowing team finished third overall after claiming a silver medal and two bronzes at its first ACC Rowing Championship on Saturday morning on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
Junior Georgia Hamilton was named to the All-ACC First Team and senior Rebecca Soja was named All-ACC Second Team during the awards ceremony at the conclusion of the day's racing.
After finishing second to second-seeded and 10th-ranked Notre Dame in each of its Friday heats to make the grand final in each class, the third-seeded Orange won silver medals in the second varsity eight and bronze in the third varsity eight and the day's main event, the varsity eight grand final.
Virginia swept all the events to win its 14th ACC title in the last 15 years and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Notre Dame, the 10-time BIG EAST champion, finished second in three of four events to finish second overall.
"We are really pleased to row with the caliber of crews that are at ACC Championship," head coach Justin Moore said. "It was a great statement for the enhanced ACC. This is the first time in my tenure that we have beaten Notre Dame in an eight. The margins show our continued progress. I think the team performed as well as they could. Coming out of exams and graduation, they really stayed focused on the task at hand."
In the ACC Championship's final race, the V8 grand final, the Orange jumped out early to second-place position behind top-seeded and fifth-ranked Virginia, but Notre Dame overtook the Orange in first 1,000 meters. With Clemson pulling close, Syracuse made a move in the middle portion of the race course to distance itself from the host Tigers and fifth-place Duke to easily finish third in 6:33.0. It was SU's top time of the season, including five previous races on the same course, and the first time the Orange has beaten Clemson in the V8 in Moore's tenure.
"I was really happy to see them go with Notre Dame and counter-punch with them," Moore said. "Duke and Clemson made a good charge but we responded well and stayed a length out. I think to be a boat a length off the 10th-ranked team in the country makes a powerful statement."
Syracuse's 2V8 provided the team's top finish and most drama of the day, going toe-to-toe with Notre Dame over the length of the course. After the Orange bow-ball had the advantage early in the race, the Irish inched ahead in the third 500 meters before SU's turned it on in the sprint, taking second-place by three seats.
"I think that last change in gears reflects the spirit of the women in that boat," Moore said. "There are some good racers in that boat. Gillian (Carlucci) provided great leadership with that boat."
SU's 3V8 opened the day with a third-place performance, finishing behind the Cavaliers and Irish, while the V4 placed fourth in its grand final.
"Clemson did a great job hosting," Moore said. "We are fortunate to have a site like this in the ACC and it was a great experience for the student-athletes."
