Helped the Orange to its first national tournament appearance in 1981
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's basketball program has achieved great success since its inception in 1971. Over the next two weeks, Cuse.com will spotlight a select alumna from the Syracuse women's basketball program daily.

In the fifth Cuse.com Alumnae Spotlight, we look at Libby McNulty.

McNulty was on the Syracuse University women's basketball team from 1979-83. The Dunmore, Pa. native helped the Orange to the 1981 EAIAW 1-A Championship. Via the EAIAW 1-A Championship, Syracuse advanced to the 1981 AIAW National Tournament, the national tournament for women's college basketball from 1972-82.

As a freshman, McNulty played in 26 contests in her first season on campus. She averaged 5.1 points, 2.8 assists, and 1.8 assists per game for the 1979-80 campaign. In head coach Barbara Jacob's second season, Syracuse recorded a 17-10 overall record.

The following season, McNulty broke out, averaging 10.4 points, 6.5 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per contest. The guard dished out a Syracuse record 15 assists against Monmouth that season. Her 224 assists in 1980-81 is the best mark in program history and her .568 field goal percentage for the year ranks second in SU history. Syracuse defeated St. John's in the EAIAW 1-A Championship to advance to the AIAW National Tournament for the first time in history.

In her third season on campus, McNulty played in 28 games. She averaged 5.1 points, 3.4 assists, and 1.9 rebounds per contest in 1981-82. The Orange owned a 19-9 overall record that season.

As a senior, McNulty guided the Orange in its inaugural season in the BIG EAST. She played in all but one contest in her final season on campus. Her highlight of the year came against Howard when she matched her program record with 15 assists in a single game.

For her career, McNulty finished with 438 assists. She ranks sixth in program history in career assists. McNulty also ranks eight in school history with 3.8 assists per contest.

The 2015-16 Syracuse University women's basketball team will embark on an international tour in early August.
