Over the past few weeks, head coach Ange Bradley has continually announced her class of 2017. Previously, she announced Borg van der Velde, Sarah Luby, Isabelle Sumichrast and Emma Likly.
A center midfielder from Fairfax, Virginia who earned all-state honors in 2016, Claire Cooke is set to join the Orange in 2017.
She's a two-time All-Patriot Conference selection and a member of the First Team 6A North All-Region Team in addition to her all-state selection in 2016 who played for W.T. Woodson High School and also played for Rampage Field Hockey.
"Claire is a very good midfield player," said head coach Ange Bradley. "She is quick, possesses great lateral speed and has the ability to eliminate both of the dribble and pass. Her vision, awareness, skill and working intelligence will position her to be an immediate impact for our team. I am so happy to welcome her and her family to the Syracuse Hockey Family."
A three-year varsity letterwinner at Woodson High School, she was named team MVP in 2016 under head coach Margaret Jarrell
"Claire is a selfless player who took immense athletic talents and turned herself into a top field hockey player through sheer willpower," Jarrell said. "Her athleticism is a natural gift, but it is her competitive nature and ability to out-work the girl next to her that allows her to succeed.
For Rampage, she played all over the field, primarily at center mid, but also saw time at center defense and on both wings of the midfield.
"Claire is one of the speediest players that I have ever coached," said Rampage head coach Starr Karl. "Claire is very driven with her speed, athleticism and relentlessness to keep possession of the ball. I think she will do great things at Syracuse University. Claire is a leader and she pushes her teammates to work hard."
Despite being born in Tennessee and living in Virginia through her years of schooling, Cooke has always been drawn to Syracuse, adding that's she's always been an Orange fan.
"Once I stepped foot on the beautiful campus, I saw myself here for the next four years," Cooke said. "I love the atmosphere and the Orange pride, however the selling point for me was Coach Bradley. Playing for her is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I am blessed to have been given."
At Syracuse, Cooke intends to major in special education, concentrating specifically on elementary education.
Cooke began playing field hockey just four years ago and looks forward to continuing the legacy that great Syracuse players have left before her.
"I am so excited to be a part of a team that is completely dedicated and motivated to being the best athletes and field hockey players that they can be," Cooke said. "I plan on being an impact player in the center midfield no matter how much time or work is required to earn that position."
Cooke added that she has goals of becoming an All-American at SU and hopes to one day represent the United States in international competition.
The daughter of Thomas and Jennifer Cooke, she's one of eight children in her family, with siblings Hannah (23), Katie (20), Jack (15), Mae (14), Genna (11), Ava (8) and Patrick (7).
