Three-time All-American and two-time Big 12 Player of the Year Vanessa Shippy joined the Orange coaching staff in the summer of 2018.
Shippy joined first-year head coach Shannon Doepking for the 2019 season where Syracuse compiled a 21-32 record. Leading the infield and helping with offensive efforts, Shippy and the coaching staff helped the Orange nearly double its home run total from 2018, hitting 27 in 2019. Syracuse also had significant progress in doubles and RBIs. The Orange's 73 doubles and 1.38 per game both rank fourth all-time in single season records at Syracuse while the team's 14 triples are a second-best in program history. The Orange's 0.26 triples per game ranked 32nd nationally.Â
Shippy's second season was cut short by the COVID-19 global pandemic, in which the Orange went 10-10.Â
Shippy arrived at Syracuse following the conclusion of one of the most prolific careers in Oklahoma State softball history where she started every game of her career. Shippy owns 12 school records, including highest career on-base percentage (.613) and the single-season record for most runs scored (73). During her senior season, Shippy became the third Big 12 player all time to earn conference Player of the Year honors twice. She is also a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American and the first two-time Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was also a top-10 finalist for both USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year and the Senior CLASS Award. Following the conclusion of her career, Shippy was named a top-30 finalist for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year award, becoming the first Oklahoma State athlete to do so.Â
In April 2018, Shippy became the first Cowgirl to be drafted by the National Pro Faspitch league before opting to sign with Scrap Yard Fastpitch, an independent professional team in Houston. A native of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Shippy was the 2014 Gatorade Idaho Softball Player of the Year. She earned her degree in marketing and finance from Oklahoma State in 2018.Â
