STORRS, CT (Oct. 14) - Junior midfielder John Andrade (East Providence, RI) knocked in a rebound off a Syracuse penalty kick in the 39th minute to lead the Orangemen soccer team to a 1-0 victory at number-one ranked Connecticut on Oct. 14 in Storrs, CT.
The Orangemen are now 7-4-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the BIG EAST. It is their second-consecutive victory versus a ranked opponent after beating No. 21 Adelphi, 5-1, on Oct. 9. The Huskies are now 9-2-2 overall and 4-1-2 in conference play.
Syracuse was outshot, 18-8, but senior goalkeeper Kevin Bacher (East Meadow, NY) made four saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season. In the two contests this week, the only goal Bacher allowed in 180 minutes of play came on a penalty kick versus Adelphi.
Bacher's shutout was just the second time the Huskies have been blanked this season, and first shutout loss of the 2000 campaign.
Andrade's goal was his fifth of the season, tying him for the team lead. Andrade is also now tied for the Orangemen scoring lead with 13 points (five goals, three assists).
It was Syracuse's first win over the Huskies since 1997, a span of three games.
The Orangemen return home for a BIG EAST tilt with Providence College on Friday, October 20 at 5 p.m. Syracuse will also host a BIG EAST contest with Boston College on Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
