Neither team scored in the first half. Junior forward Michelle Aronowicz (Exton, PA/Downingtown) gave SU a 1-0 lead with 15:52 remaining in the second half. She took a pass from junior forward Becky Kohler (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) and converted for her eighth goal of the season. She has now tallied five goals in Syracuse's last six games.
With 5:22 left in the contest, Providence tied the game at 1-1. Breanne Wojnarowicz scored off a direct hit on a penalty corner. She was assisted by Julie Tanguay and Amy DePietro.
Suehnholz's game-winning goal came with 35 seconds remaining in overtime.
It was the seventh overtime decision of the season for Syracuse, a new school record. The Orangewomen are 3-4 in overtime games this year.
Latsko finished with six saves, while Heather Tattersall made 12 stops for the Friars.
The Orangewomen are 11-6, 2-2 in the BIG EAST. Providence improved to 6-12, 2-3 in the conference.
Syracuse hosts Quinnipiac at 1 p.m. on Oct. 22.
