Despite the loss, the Orangemen still qualified for the BIG EAST tournament. Syracuse will be the eighth seed and travel to top-seeded Connecticut for a quarterfinal matchup on Saturday, November 4 or Sunday, November 5.
The game's only goal was scored in the 65th minute by the Panthers' Josh Whitham. Whitham took a pass from Andrew Light and beat Syracuse goalkeeper Kevin Bacher (East Meadow, NY) from seven yards out. Bacher made eight saves in the loss.
Syracuse, which entered the game ranked 20th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, now stands at 8-7-2 overall. The Orangemen have lost three consecutive outings. It was the sixth time this season that Syracuse has been shutout.
The Orangemen still have one regular-season game remaining, a home tilt with New York region foe Hartwick on Wednesday, November 1. Bacher and fellow seniors Sean Boyle (Manlius, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) and Mario Cristofori (Fairport, NY) will be playing their final regular season home game. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
