Syracuse is now 6-4-2 overall, while the Panthers drop to 6-4. The Orangemen entered tonight's game ranked sixth in the New York Region poll, while Adelphi, in addition to its national ranking, occupied the second spot in the regional poll.
The Orangemen's five goals are the most in a single-game since a 5-3 win versus Hartwick on November 4, 1998. Syracuse's previous season-high scoring output was in a 3-2 win at Cornell.
Syracuse caught a break on the first goal of the game when the ball glanced off a Panther defenders foot past goalkeeper Stephen Elliot for an own goal in the seventh minute.
Cristofori put the Orangemen up 2-0 in the 40th minute when he intercepted an Adelphi pass and drove the ball past the goalkeeper in the bottom left corner. Just two minutes later junior midfielder John Andrade (East Providence, RI) got on the board with a shot that touched the back of the net in the upper left corner. Freshman Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, PA) was credited with the assist, and the Orangemen held a 3-0 halftime lead.
The Panthers cut the lead to 3-1 in the 49th minute when Marcin Pachowicz converted a penalty kick, beating Syracuse goalkeeper Kevin Bacher to his right. Bacher shut the Panthers down for the rest of the game, making four saves in the victory.
Cristofori got the goal right back less than seven minutes later when he took a pass from freshman Ari Schneider (East Brunswick, NJ) and slid it past Elliot for his second goal of the game. He would provide the assist on the Orangemen's final goal of the game, a score by Johnson in the 60th minute.
Johnson remains on top of the Syracuse scoring list with 13 points (five goals, three assists). Cristofori is now tied for the team lead with five goals and is second in scoring with 12 points.
The win was Syracuse's fourth in its last five games. It was the first victory over a ranked opponent since a 2-1 victory against 21st-ranked Cornell on October 20, 1999.
The Orangemen have the rest of the week off to prepare for a road game at number-one ranked Connecticut. They take on the Huskies on Saturday, October 14 at 7 p.m.
