Syracuse Women Jump Out to 72-38 Lead In Dual Meet Against Massachusetts

AMHERST, MA -- The Syracuse University women's swimming and
diving team
won five of six events Friday afternoon to jump out to a 72-38
lead
against Massachusetts in a two-day dual-meet competition.
Freshman Elyse McDonough (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) set aMassachusetts pool record in the 200-yard individual medley by finishing first with a time of 2:07.75.
Sophomore diver Julie Van Deusen (Bear, DE/The Hill School) set a new Syracuse school record in the one-meter dive with a first-place score of 428.03, also an NCAA Zone qualifying standard. Van Deusen broke Shannon Jerome's 1991 school mark of 421.90 in the one-meter event.
Senior diver Sara Mastropole (Milford, CT/JP Divers) also posted an NCAA Zone qualifying score in the one-meter event against UMass, tallying 388.05 points.
Senior Eleanor Thoet (Bath, ME/Long Reach Swim Club) and freshman Megan Daney (Newtown, PA/NRG Swimming) finished 1-2 in the 50 freestyle. Thoet won the race in a time of 24.28, while Daney was second with a time of 24.82.
After the first night of competition, the Minutemen are leading the Orangemen, 79-30. Four individuals captured second place in their respective events. Junior Djordje Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia/Red Star) swam the 200 IM in a time of 1:54.47. Freshman Spencer Raymond (Idstein, Germany/Singapore American School) was second in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 21.60. Senior Dustin Riley (Carson City, NV/Carson City Athletic Club) finished the 1650 freestyle in a time of 16:23.37 and senior diver Adam Earle (Camillus, NY/Syracuse Chargers) registered an NCAA Zone qualifying score in the three-meter dive with his second-place score of 495.00. The winner, Logan Alomar from UMass, recorded a 503.55.
