Sweeney helped open the holes for Ernie Davis during his Heisman Trophy season. He was recognized as one of the top players in the country when he played in the North-South Game (1962), Coaches All-Star Game (1963), Senior Bowl (1963), and Coaches All-America Game (1963). He became a first round pick of the San Diego Chargers in 1963. Sweeney played for the Chargers from 1963-73, then joined the Washington Redskins for 1974 & 1975. He was an eight-time Pro Bowl selection (1965-68, 1970-73).
