Ball State (2-0) was held to just two shots in the first half, but the Cardinals made them count. Shanna Fritz took the initial shot from the right wing, which bounced off the right post and in front of the net. Hayes, a native of St. James, Barbados, collected the loose ball and found the net for her first collegiate goal.
Cardinal goalkeeper Susan McDowell made five saves in recording her second-straight shutout. It was the first solo shutout of her collegiate career.
Syracuse (2-1) had its share of scoring opportunities, but could not connect. The Orangewomen missed their best opportunity 10:50 into the game when fifth-year senior forward Laura Fitzpatrick (Dalton, PA/Lackawanna Trail) missed over top of the net on a penalty stroke.
Syracuse held the advantage in shots, 8-5, and penalty corners, 6-4.
SU sophomore goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) had two saves on the afternoon.
The Orangewomen host Central Michigan on Sat., Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. They entertain Fairfield at 2 p.m. on Sun., Sept. 10.
