
Orange Track & Field Opens Indoor Season

The two squads combined to win 11 of the 32 events, including three of the four relays. The Orangewomen swept both their relay events. The quartet of sophomore Jennifer Moreau (Topsham, ME), senior Allison Pompey (Cohoes, NY), sophomore Aleccia Boland (London, Ontario) and freshman Lauren Rich (Londonderry, NH) clocked a 13:05.23 to take the DMR, while the foursome of junior StacyAnn Dwyer (Huntington Station, NY), junior Alison Culley (Foxborough, MA), freshman Lanae Walker (Dallas, TX) and senior Alicia Crowd (Greenwich, NY) won the 4x400-meter relay in 3:54.23.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team of sophomore Sean Burnett (Uniondale, NY), sophomore Eugene Giles (Prospect, KY), freshman Sam Termanini (Cheshire, CT) and junior Naeem Smith (Brooklyn, NY) was victorious with a time of 3:26.07.
Crowd and Culley also earned individual victories for the Orangewomen. Crowd won the 400-meter dash in a time of 56.08, while Culley took the 55-meter dash in 7.19. She also finished second in the 200-meter dash with a 25.29 clocking. Sophomore Maria Varela (Deer Park, NY) earned the Orangewomen's other individual victory, running a 18:36.73 in the 5000 meters.
Giles and Smith were the two-time winners on the men's side, taking the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run, respectively. Giles clocked a 50.49 in his victory, while Smith won in 1:57.06. Other individual winners for the Orangemen included sophomore Steve Bedard (London, Ontario) in the weight throw senior Mickey Bush (Clifton Park, NY) in the 3000 meters, freshman John Bitok (Kitale, Kenya) in the 5000-meters and senior Alex Brown (New Paltz, NY) in the shot put.
Several Orange student-athletes qualififed for championship events at the meet. On the women's side, Culley made herself eligible for the ECAC Indoor Championship in the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. She also qualififed for the BIG EAST Indoor Championship in the 200 meters. Crowd qualified for both the BIG EAST and ECAC meets in the 400-meter dash, while senior Opal Jones (Capitol Heights, MD) will compete in the ECAC championship in the 55-meter hurdles. Junior Aprelle Watkins (Virginia Beach, VA), competing in her first meet since her freshman year after undergoing surgery for a broken foot last season, qualified for the BIG EAST championship in the triple jump.
For the Orangemen, four field-event competitors will take part in championship action. Sophomore Tim Adrian (Moorpark, CA) qualified for the BIG EAST meet in the weight throw, as did Bedard. Bedard and Brown also qualified for conference action in the shot put. Sophomore Richard Polidore (Chino, CA) will compete at the BIG EAST meet in the long jump.
The Orange's next action comes on Saturday, January 13 at Penn State. Syracuse will compete with Penn State, Villanova, LaSalle and Seton Hall.
